Challenging run with lovely scenery. Poor start arrangements

Lovely 20k run through beautiful Surrey countryside. Well marked. Limited marshal support but route well enough signed not to be a problem. Food/drink stop at 12k (52k for 60k runners) was well stocked. Only frustration was that there was no refreshments or even any water at the start of the 20k, so having got the train early to make sure we didn't miss the connections, we were unable to get anything to drink for the hour prior to the start. If we had been relying on a water supply to fill running bottles, we would have been stuffed. I know it was only 20k compared to the other 42k and 60k runners but it would have been easy to provide some water, of nothing else.

Hi Tim - I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the route. We encourage runners to come prepared, but plan to provide water for those who may have forgotten at the 20km start point. I hope you'll join us in 2018! Thanks, Becky

If I didn't need to get a map out, it must have been well marked! Super run all the way around. Loved the loop, places I never would have been or seen. The marshals were extreamly friendly, fantastic smiles and very motivational.

I loved every step. Can't wait till next year!

Good race but too expensive

It was a really good race in a nice tipical landscape but I think that 25£ is too much for a 20k race considering the things offered.

A great, great run

Beautiful scenery, spot-on course marking and slick organisation!

A little more time on the grey stuff than I would have liked, but forgivable as it was following the Fox Way.

Hi Craig - Good to hear you thought the course marking and organisation were good. I can't take credit for the scenery. It is awesome though! For 2018 we will look at small course amends in order to reduce the amount of time on the roads whilst still maintaining our Fox Way essence. I hope you'll join us then! Becky

Beautiful course

I completed the 20km.

I really enjoyed this race. The atmosphere was laid back and supportive. All the marshals on course were very friendly and encouraging and so were the other runners. The check points had tons of food, which was nice. The registration was simple and the bag check was very appreciated.

the course was beautiful with different terrain- woods, canal path, and some road through some small villages. We were lucky that there were also tons of bluebells in bloom. For the most part it was easy to navigate however I did get lost right at the end. I'm not sure if a marker had gone missing but another runner was also lost at the same location so one more arrow would have been helpful as well as another sign on the bag drop room at the end.

I would definitely recommend this race especially for people new to trail running.

Melissa- I'm glad you enjoyed the event. Those bluebells were very obliging!!! Sorry to hear you found the end of the route a little confusing. We've learnt some marking up lessons and hope you join us in 2018 to see the results! Becky

Brilliant event

Fox Ultra

My first ultra and I really can't fault it. Well organised, friendly, beautiful scenery, wonderful enthusiastic volunteers, good range of foods at aid stations, a fantastic medal and buff at the end and a great finish area in general. I'll be back for the 20K option next year so I can really enjoy the most beautiful bit of the course (too tired this time).

If I really needed to find any negatives, I would say the last aid station running out of cold water just before I got there wasn't great - not the end of the world as I had a bit left in my Camelbak (although had been hoping for a refill) and the new water arrived just as I was heading off but I was so sore and stiff by that point that I didn't want to wait around. Some hand sanitiser and a tub of vaseline at the aid stations would have been a bonus but not essential.

The 20% road/80% off-road advertised were more like 35/65 but I'm still happy with my choice of shoes as I wouldn't have made it down some of those steep forest descents or through the sandy bits in road shoes.

Dani - Thanks for the great review. We will be taking a look at the route to try and tweak it and increase the off road portions without loosing our Fox Way essence. See you in 2018 for the 20km :) Becky

Fox Ultra review

What I loved:
- Finish line with massage and nice place for families andd friends to wait for runners. Ideal place for recovery before heading home.
- Trail sections near Shere and Godalming.

What I didn't liked:
-Too many road section, I will add to the description of the race the % of road and trail paths so people can pick the trainers properly. Very boring course from 7 to 40 km. I know that the race was along the "Fox  Way" but I would consider modifying it to make it more countryside like and to avoid sharing the path with cars.
- Lack of volunteers. specially when crossing roads. I found the A246 crossing particularly dangerous due to the speed of the cars.

Posted on 24.04.17

Reply from the race organiser

Albert - I'm glad you enjoyed the finish area and latter run sections. We will be modifying the course where we can for 2018 to increase the trail sections without loosing our Fox Way essence. We try to limit road sections and crossings, but with a circular route this can be tricky. I hope you come back for 2018! Becky

Beautiful route... marshals were fantastic!  Sweeper was lovely and medics at the back were fun.  Shame about the medals but I know Becky is on it with sorting out sending some out.

Last year I ran Andys Hangman ultra, 35 miles in 9.40.  So completing this 37 mile run in 9.35 was amazing and a great achievement for me.

One for the diary

Fox Ultra

This race was easy to enter, thorough but laid back and fuss-free. The start and finish being in different places was a very minor drawback - we ended up getting a lift there and then walking 5 minutes from the finish to Godalming train station which was super easy.

As far as scenery goes - this was lovely - such a mix. This is why I run trails - if anything can take my mind off 26.2 miles its something to look at! There was never any chance of getting lost - the whole marathon was excellently signposted which was reassuring as you spent a lot of time on your own. There was a very long stretch between second and last aid station and as it was quite warm a few of us ran out of water before we got there but the volunteers soon helped us out when we arrived. Finish line was in a great place and a great experience - ice pops and sunshine. My only question is why weren't there more people doing this race - it's a corker! Great medal and a buff too.

Great scenery and organisation

Very friendly community brought together by nice organisers.

I am not sure if we should start the 60k at 6.00am (too early)

The course is actually not challenging and the variety of scenery make it really enjoyable.

Perhaps more than the 20% road advertised (I would say 35%)

Quality race, very friendly and well sign posted

This race is very well organised. The orange route markers are easy to follow.

There were 5 water stations for the 60km race, which were sufficient today, but on a hot day may be too far apart. I discussed this with race organisers post race who were very positive

At the finish line, everyone was applauded and within seconds given a finishers medal and fox race snoody and also there printed times.

I would definately do this race again

Fantastic route. Had to drop down to the half due to injury and lack of training but will apply for the ultra again next year. Tough start with quite a climb but it was worth it for the views. Supportive marshalls - all with a smile. Trail runners are the best.

A great first ultra experience

Brilliant event. Superb organisation.

Marshalls very helpful & friendly, aid stations were well managed with great range of food. Coffee at last aid station was a wonderful boost!

The route was well signed except for a couple of wonky signs along the river which nearly put us off track.

Lovely route, though more hills in second half made it tough. Very enjoyable overall, I'll definitely consider doing this race again.

A great introduction to the world of ultra running. Easy organisation and plentiful aid stations, with great volunteers relaxed me into my run, especially when I realised I didn't have to worry about getting lost because of the excellant signange.  More road than I was expecting. Feeling foxy

Despite an early start time of 6am this was a well organised first time event. Great route that takes in all that is best in the Surrey countryside.mSome demanding ascents and descents but also some places to stretch the legs and make up time. Feeding stations could do with beefing up, not as much choice as I've seen at other Ultras but enough to get me by. Various distances offered - the full 60k, marathon and half marathon distances and a really good relay. Definitely back next year.

Beautiful run

I did the marathon distance of this event and this was a bit tricky to sort out logistics as the start and finish are in different places and as the event is so small there was no transport provided between the two.
