Pigs pigs pigs

3rd time running this - just love the pig shapped course, the pig medal, the bacon butties after and of course the pig of the hil for the first half of the run.

Worth arriving reasonably early to get a good parking spot as can be a long walk. Lovely setting and well catered. Easy flat start before a number of hills to the mid point then a nice fast descent back to the finish.

Well organised and well attended, get in early as this does sell out too.

A tough challenge to end the year

Hogs Back Road Race

This was the first time I’ve done Hogsbackroadrace. I know the organisers are a friendly bunch, and I had tried to do some of the summer events, but couldn’t make the evening runs. I was already looking forward to taking part in this event, and then I was asked to Pace, a no brainier for me.

I have completed a full review of my experience in my blog, so I will just put some highlights that will be helpful for people when signing up, and you can read my blog if you want more details.

https://pickupthepacepaul.com/2017/12/15/hogs-back-road-race-2017

You don’t get anything in the post, so have to get in early for registration. It was quick and painless, only issue this year was it was raining and bloody cold. If it was better weather I think the atmosphere would have been great.

You are pre warned about arriving early to avoid queues to park. I actually missed the queues, but if I came 5 minutes later it would have cost me an extra 25. The initial wave get to park by the event on pavement, everyone else park on the grass on either side of the long drive in. The queue is because you slow waiting for those In front to park. This would usually be fine but the weather was terrible so a few cars needed to be pushed out at the end.

This is a messy, wet, muddy, difficult event... I loved it. A strange distance at 11.7 k, I think it was a little short. It’s not one to Pb except for improving on previous experiences of the same course. Everyone was friendly and the course was easy to navigate. Support was sparse but this may have been because of the rain. The course was so bloody hilly, it was a real challenge for everyone, but I love an event to push myself.

I wasn’t a particular fan of the trail section, but it’s mainly because of the rain it was really muddy. The water stations were basic water in cups, this was fine for this event, if it was longer and warmer I would have a different view, but nothing more was needed.

I would definitely run this event again. The finish was in the village with bacon sandwich available and a pig shaped medal, what’s not to like.

Well done for the race taking place.

First point was that the race went ahead so top points for that, lots of other events fell to the weather over this weekend.

Heavy rain made the course more interesting if nothing else, but is it is XC season so made it more fun IMHO.

Course is very nice, tougher first 5km as you take in the climbs then downhill last 5km before a last lump to splash down to the finish area.

The Strava map is funny.

Water and banana and bling at the end.

Pacing was difficult if keeping on pace, as you pulled away from people on the ups and people went past you on the start and we had nothing to really stand out as pacers, but have passed that on to the team.

If you get there early you can pack near the start finish if not you park about 1km down the road.

There is a little play area for kids if you dragging them along on a warmer day.

Has selection of food and warm drinks, and ON were around this year letting people try on the shoes.

A fun end of year road/xc race.

Hog hog

this was my first run pacing and boy it wasn’t the easiest race to start with.

The weather was awful we had rain and then some more rain with a bit of snow mixed in as well.

The race started bang on 9 which is always a bonus.

The race is a hilly first 3 Miles with some nice decents after.

My fellow pacer walked up with first hill so I was all alone

Great fun and challenging race

A fantastic event. This was me third year taking on the challenge and despite the weather it was another superb morning.

Excellent to have pacers this year to tackle the challenging 11.7km race.  Whilst advertised as a road race, there is a good 2km that I would describe as trail but all good fun.  Lots of climbing in the first half and an enjoyable downhill and mostly flat second half.

Would highly recommend to people!

Hilly run

This was the second time I completed this event and it was, well, ok.  Obviously you cannot blame the organisers for the weather and all the mud, but I think some sort of cover against the rain would be welcome - after all the organsiers encouraged the early arrival...

The race instructions suggest you arrive early (from 7am...for a 9am start) and that regisitration closes at 8:30am (it didn't by the way).  So I arrived around 8am (rain, sleet, traffic) got my number, froze, got soaking wet... and ended up (like so many other people) having to jog back to my car and sit in it for half an hour.  Why not just post the numbers out?

Had I got there at 7am I could have had the pleasure of sitting in my car closer to the start line... great. But no thanks...it looks like it takes even longer to get out afterwards.

This event started and finished in Loseley Park but that is it - the actual buildings in the park (that might have offered some heat or rain protection) are not available to runners and most of the run is achieved after turning left out of the gate.

The route is its saving grace however, quite a challenge up and down hills and a muddy trail section which is fun (albeit slippery when wet).  The marshalls were few in number I thought (perhaps beaten by the rain).  Those that were there did their best, though on the trail section I saw several walkers (and runners going in the opposite direction) getting in the way a bit.

Post race you have to collect your medal yourself, rather than be presented with it.  No change in the design from last year (it must be a thing) and a banana/bottle of water advertising the Surrey Half.

I think this event is missing something - some energy, some ooompppfff.

If this review feels a bit flat, that's probably how it left me feeling afterwards.  Some love it, fair enough - for me, it doesn't live up to the hype.

And there wasn't a post run Hog Roast afterwards (denied!).  You could have had black sausages in a bap or black pork patties in a bap, if that floats your boat... I can't comment on the taste as I swerved them.

Thanks for taking the time to provide us with detailed feedback Chris.

I'm sorry that the unfortunate weather dampened your experience of the event. We do provide dry bag storage facilities at all aat-events for free, so please do bring a coat in bad weather and (as described in the pre-race communications) you can store it safely whilst you run.

Loseley House is a fantastic venue, but due to the popularity of the race we are very limited by parking. We made improvements to the parking plan and signage for 2017 but we still advise runners (in our race communications) to expect queues.

We're sorry to hear that you didn't notice the design changes in the medal this year. The pig medal is a popular feature of the event; We've changed the colours, increased the size and made other design changes to it every year.

We do not advertise a Hog Roast - sorry if you've been misinformed. It's a great idea though! Award-winning sausage / bacon baps are available to purchase from The Giggly Pig Co.

Hope to see you at another aat-event soon.

What a good run this is!

This year was my second time for this one.  Last year was a bright sunny frosty morning; cold and wet this time!  Nonetheless a large cheerful turnout, quick registration, bag drop, water station + jelly babies, and local people encouraging us on at various points along the route....and the excellent Hog-shaped medal and correspondingly shaped Garmin/Strava course!!

A great distance with a mix of flat and hill

The weather was awful, but we all turned out in force. Runners were advised to arrive by 7.30am  (to get parked easily) for a 9am start which was a bit of a pain, but seeing the others parked further away struggling to get out of the mud it all became worth it.

Portaloos, registration and food stations all close together.

I think the terrible weather hampered my enjoyment a little as my feet were completely frozen until about the 3km mark, but having said that it was a great route and a great distance.

Huge thanks to organisers and marshals on such a freezing and wet morning.

I was pleasantly surprised to get home and see that we had run in the shape of a hog. Clever.

First time Pacer running a pig of a course

What a way to celebrate a Birthday.
Up at 5:30...
On the road by 6:10
Oh yeah, and it was rain/snow and dark!

Must love running

The course was amazing, mud in places and puddles galore - that weren't going to stop the fun. Pacing at 5:30/km with Stu and although I was dreading the second hill - a 2 mile uphill incline, it was pleasant and I'd run up it again.
And then the downhill.. almost reminded me of the Dumbo scene and the train when it reacher the top and free-wheeled the whole way down.
The marshals were great and appeared just when you needed them - THANK YOU!

The course - a beautifully shaped run for your garmin (other devices are available) and quite possibly one of my best runs of the year.

Happy to run/pace that one again - although I spent more time driving there than I did running

First time running it

Weather was abysmal - very cold, rain, windy - just one of those things. BUT - it was forecast and there was no shelter at all at the start or finish.  Wondered if one of the buildings could have been opened up or some cover provided? Plenty of space to put up some gazebos.

Apart from that - route was very well marked and  marashals were plentiful and very supportive - much appreciated when you are towards the back. And the scenery would have been lovely on a nice day :-)

Enjoyed the route - more bridleways than I thought - really nice mix of on and off road. Would like to do this again !

It was a killer... but I'll definitely be back!

What a great race - bit of a random distance but it was fun to push myself a bit further than a 10K without having to go for a half. The USP (and name sake) of this race is the Hog Back hill - the first 5 km is a brutal slog up the biggest hill the area has to offer. It really ups the challenge level!

As with all aat events, the atmosphere was friendly, the marshals were helpful and encouraging. There were supposedly pacers but I didn't see them on route, but there were flags at the start displaying paces so people could line up in speed order. That was a nice touch that avoided the usual manic overtaking game at the begining of most races.

All in all it was a great event. Throughly enjoyed it. Big thanks to the organisers!

Excellent - awesome route (especially the route shape !)

Have done this many times before, and this one was by far the worst weather - cold and wet (pouring down for 90 minutes before the start), but eased off to almost nothing for the run itself (great organisation that).  Love the route, shame you couldn't see too much today, but it's still a good one - mix of road, and fire trail type path.  AAT organisation great as ever, super friendly and informal, but very well organised - love their events

Nice venue, interesting course

Pros: lovely start/finish venue

Lovely supportive marshals. The best I’ve seen

Good selection of ‘stalls’

Enough toilets

Pacers

Chip timing and time text to me immediately

Cons (being really picky): arrived at about 7.10 as suggested. Lots still being set up. Really could have done with a hot drink but they weren’t ready until 8ish

Number collection was a bit haphazard. It was still dark and the team were struggling. I offered my phone as a torch. We were told they weren’t really in order. Weather conditions made their job 100 times harder.

I finished just on the hour and the queue between the finish and the medal/water collection was long

Getting out of the car park past tired runners took about 20 mins.

Second year running this and knocked 4 mins off my time!

Appalling weather conditions today and a smaller field of runners, but we still had a great time. Good hilly course, lovely long shallow downhill sections where you can really get your speed up to recover from the climbs. Excellent marshals and unique medal. I would probably suggest the gravel/track sections are more than 10%of the course though, and today in the bad rain they were a bit more tricky to manage in road shoes, but that's me being really picked. Loved it, I'll be back x

This is a fun race with a piggy theme. It’s a good distance, doesn’t take too long and doesn’t eat into the rest of your day. Great route, great views and a great buzz

This was my first time entering this race although I have ran parts of the route prior. There was a great atmosphere on the day which probably helped me come in over 5 minutes quicker than expected. I biked to the venue and got a free saddle cover which was a nice incentive! The sausage in a bap after was well worth the wait also (although you, quite rightly, have to pay extra for this.) I also had time to pop into the Watts Gallery cafe after for another warm snack! You run past the Watts Gallery during the race. I will definitly sign up for next years.

Once again a fantastic Hogs Back Road Race by AAT-events. Superb if somewhat chilly weather, a challenging course, wonderful scenery and friendly and encouraging marshalls. Congratulations also on the new timing and feedback system. This race just keeps getting better and better.

Fast, fun and frenetic end of season race

Raced the Hog's Head for the first time today after it being recommended to me by friends who had done it last year. As warned, it was hilly and challenging, but a beautiful course, impeccably organised, and friendly marshalls. There was a real range of runners there so everyone felt welcome. Prizes were cases of Hog's Head beer. Brilliant! Would highly recommend it!

Stunning scenery

A lovely spot for a challenging run, the hills in the first half are worth it for the gorgeous views, scenery and quaint villages. All the marshalls were friendly, very supportive and helpful. Overall well organised, although did have a long queue afterwards for refreshments, which was frustrating in the cold. Love the medal and unique "hog" route.

Fun hilly race

This is a fun race occurring during the run-up to Christmas and although not too long, at just under 12km, has enough hills and beautiful scenery to make it challenging and interesting at the same time. I originally ran it for the novelty of the course which is shaped like a hog and have been back each year since. The event organisation is great with easy parking, fun atmosphere and quick registration

First timer at this event.
Driving to the event: Satnav took us directly to the parking site. Good directions.
Parking: Loads of space (got there early).
Event "Village": About right for the size of the run.
Toilets: Only let down, could have done with some more portaloos.
Course: Good mix of road and trail paths. Some lovely views too. Those hills, made for a hard but fun run.
Marshalls: Excellent

Overall: Good race, will do again.

Hogs Back Road Race

Amazing clear but very cold morning. Easy parking registration and number collection and plenty of toilets so queueing time was minimum.

An undulating course but withte first mile or so all down easy to warm up. The ups are certainly ups (some v steep) but nothing unmanageable.

An amazing view over Guildford from the top of the hill and then all down to the end.

Fantastic welcome at the finish and one of the best medals all year.

Great run

This is a hilly but fantastic, scenic run on the outskirts of Guildford in Surrey.  The race took place on a very cold but beautiful morning so there were some amazing views.  Picking up the race number was straight-forward and the race started on time.  The course and the medal are in the shape of a pig.

Great race.  A bit of a queue to leave - maybe people should be prevented from turning right.  We decided to go back to the race village for a coffee and by the time we returned the queue had gone.  I will be back again.

Great race; but one niggle

This is my third year running this race, and it was just as enjoyable as the previous two - beautiful landscapes and challenging hills make this a pre-Christmas must for me.

However this year it seemed there were less toilets than normal (or the runner numbers had increased) meaning that the queue for the toilets was ridiculous, taking me almost half an hour to reach the front of the queue and meaning that I missed the race briefing and made it to the start as the gun was going off, so I was much further back than I'd have wanted to be. Better organisation next year please, maybe one queue for all the toilets so that it's a more straightforward process?

Other than that, great race and fantastic medal - I hope to be back next year!

Posted on 04.12.16

Reply from the race organiser

Hi Emily, Thanks for taking the time to leave your review.

With over 1000 runners entered there were certainly lots more runners entered in previous years. We did increase the number of toilets, but it wasn't until later that a marshall was able to come over and help manage the queue to speed up the process. We're really sorry about the queues, but we will take your comments on board for 2017's event.

It was great to have you join us again for this run. We look forward to seeing you at your next aat event!

Hogs Back Road Race

FIrst time at the Hogs Back, a really good winter road race! Everything was very smooth at the start (although a few more toilets would always be appreciated), and clear countdown to the start. Easy number collection and bag drop. Fantastic course heading out of the Loseley Estate with two major hills, and a substantial downhill section in the second half.

Even in the cold the marshalls were attentive and encouraging. Was quite slow to leave the car park, mainly due to numbers and the size of the road leading into it. All in all a good race in a fantastic part of the county!

Good run, rubbish organisation. Muddy.

The run itself is pleasant. Tedious climb up from Guildford but a fun run downhill through Compton. Despite the race description, there IS MUD along the hill so don't wear your road shoes like I did. They will get trashed. As is usual with AAT events the organisation is poor - expect to queue at Least half an hour on the road outside to park, the arch saying 'start' was the finish etc.

Posted on 04.12.16

Reply from the race organiser

Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review Ann. Sorry that you don't enjoy the uphills and that in the year that you took part your trainers got muddy. It's disappointing for us to hear that you feel that our organisation is poor. Although we do manage the carparks to help our runners make the most of their day, we can't always control the traffic on the roads on the way in. Our race arch says "START" on one side and "FINISH" on the other - we always display this the correct way around for our runners.

Fast and friendly race for all levels

The hogs back road is a lovely, friendly race and I have enjoyed the times I have taken part. The route is partly on road and partly on a hard wide track. The first section takes you out of Loseley House estate onto the small country roads down towards Guildford with a small uphill to wake up the old legs! Then it's a down hill roll to Guildford before turning and heading up a huge, long hill to the top of the Mount. The hill levels out a little into a steady climb along the top of the hogs back on a wide bridleway. It can be a little muddy on this bit if there has been a lot of rain but the path itself is a hard surface. After the climb you are rewarded with a lovely fast, long downhill road section into Compton. After that it's a short bit of flat and a little up hill home to the finish. From memory there was 1 water stop at the top of the long steep hill (a breather was very welcome at this point!). Marshalls were all around the well marked course and provided lots of friendly encouragement.

Participants ranged from fast club runners to those tackling their first race longer than 10km. I always find the atmosphere to be friendly and welcoming and I am looking forward to the 2016 edition and another hog shaped  medal to add to the collection!

Taking place in early December it is a 6 ish mile jog through the beautiful Surrey Hills. The route is mainly road and takes in parts of Guildford town as well as some of the picturesque villages like Compton. It starts and finishes in the grounds of the splendid Loseley House.
