Reliable Race

The quality of this race has been consistently good since it's initial running in 2014. I had a couple of issues last year with the start pens however it appears that these had been rectified this year simply by making the start area easier to get in to. There's loads going on in the race area to keep you busy and normally enough toliets, although the queues did seem bigger than usual this year.

Course-wise this is definitely one to enter for a PB. It's virtually flat but there are enough inclines to break up the monotony of flat running without making it difficult. The reasonably long (around 4m) out-and-back section is pretty boring but otherwise it's a really nice course and there is the odd person dotted around the course to keep you going.

The drinks stations are sensibly-spaced, although being the sort of person that only takes on a mouthful of water half way around (and being reasonably near the front) I can't really comment on what they're like later in the day.

The crowds towards and around the finish line are always good and the PA announcer and finish area marshalls are always enthusiastic as well. The dead-straight finish along the leisure centre driveway is great for a sprint finish if you've got it left!

All-in-all it is towards the more expensive end of half marathon entry fees, but it's a good event, definitely worth doing (especially if you're after a PB) and in all honesty you really could do much worse for the money.

Decent half although not a PB course

Seemed tough for a half, a few inclines and long straights.

Very good organisation though and loved having the pacers there.

First Half Marathon

This was my first ever half marathon and it was awesome! First race I've run to have so much support on route, gives you a huge boost. Running the London Marathon soon and this was a great introductory race to running longer distance events. Lovely atmosphere, nice flat route and a great day!

Not a bad race but needed more

Surrey Half Marathon

This is a very pretty course which takes in both the views of the countryside and houses in the area.

There wasn't great support from the locals in the area and I feel that with any race this lets the feel of the event down.

The route was well marked out, great for people to go round.

The race village is minimal and it is really not clear where all of the starting locations are. Finding the race village is not easy either and could have been better signposted. Some of the marshalls seemed less than happy to be there which also created a less positive atmosphere.

I liked the route and thought that it took in the right views but I think this is a race that could do better.

Great half marathon

I ran this half marathon as part of my preparation for the Paris marathon, after reading the good reviews from last year; and it didn’t disappoint.

Living about 40 minutes away I chose to drive and park in the multi-story car park near the station. It was nice to see members of the rotary club directing the runners to the event village and start area in Woking park, about half a mile away.

The event village was a good size for the number of runners and there were plenty of portaloos which is always good!

The baggage drop was in the leisure centre and was organised by race number with plenty of volunteers.

At the start the runners were invited to their pens. The race numbers were different colours based on predicted times. Although there was nothing separating the pens, most people generally seemed to line up in a sensible place. I positioned myself towards the back of the 1:30 pen around the 1:40 pacers. When the gun went off there didn’t seem to be too much ducking and diving around other runners which can be the case in some events of this size.

The course itself was generally flat, with a couple of shortish climbs, but could definitely show PB potential (unfortunately not for me today!)

The course went out into the country roads around Woking and was a really pleasant route. There was one switchback of a few miles so it was nice to see runners coming the other way.

The support was good, particularly at the start/finish and the switchback part. In some of the local villages people were out to support and there were several bands/choirs on the route which was a nice touch. On the quieter more rural parts the marshalls provided plenty of encouragement which was appreciated.

There were several water stations, more than sufficient, and in small bottles which were easy to carry.

At the end you got a nice medal, there were bottles of Yazoo milkshakes, energy bars, haribos and fruit, and a drawstring bag provided by one of the sponsors to put it all in.

Back at the baggage drop I got my bag back quickly.

There was a short medal presentation for the winners.

I had a great day, and will definitely be back next year for another go (hopefully in PB shape then!)

Great race in a lovely rural location

Surrey Half Marathon

First time racing this event, lots of great reviews including an award on race check for 2017.

I needed an early season race and this was a great chance to meet fellow #visorclub members including the lovely Katerina!

Not being familiar with the area, it was lovely and reassuring to see members of all ages from the local rotary club helping out with directions and soon enough the handful of us from the car park had turned into a big flow of people all heading in the same direction.

The event is based next to the local leisure centre which is in a park! A lovely park it is too! Nice big open space with food stalls and trade stands and importantly a very long line of portaloo's!!

Fantastic to meet fellow race check/visor club members on the stand which also helped to make me excited for the race.

I was in the sub 1.50 pen and in a lot of races you started in the correct pen or could move backwards. Here at Surrey, there weren't really any pens! There were plenty of pacers which were used to seperate people but generally you could stand anywhere regardless of planned finishing time. As i made my way around the pen, it didn't make a lot of difference and those i was running with were pretty much around my speed. (On a number of larger races i've done, there is proper fencing and gates to seperate you and if you're in a slower pen, you end up doing a fair amount of running around people!) Here, maybe because of the smaller number of runners, it wasn't needed. As it turned out, it was fine but i'm sure it can have an effect with slower runners moving themselves up as it's not policed.

I was expecting a pretty flat race. The route was nice, around local golf clubs and local rural areas but i'd say it was more rolling with the odd little short climb. There was one out and back route which seemed to go on forever but was well supported and there was a lot of cheering from either side seeing runners go the other way.

The cheering and support at the start and finish was fantastic. Really good! Lots out on course too, although it was quiet in a some places. There were 4 water stops, all with small bottles which was good and they had taken the time to label them all with the sponsor Mercer and Surrey Half Marathon which was a nice touch.

At the finish we received a very nice medal and a few nice bits; milkshakes (very good idea), water, protein bar, leaflets, bananas which was great. A small clear plastic bag (maybe with the race name on it)  to put it all in as you went around the funnel to collect things, was probably the only thing i found missing and that would have been useful.

Overall, a very good, small, local event in a lovely location which i would run/visit again.

A great run!

Fourth time I’ve done this well organised race.  Course is relatively flat with a couple of small hills.  Great support out on the course from spectators and marshalls.  Start was slicker this year.  A finisher’s T-shirt would be nice for next year.

Surrey Half Marathon

i really enjoyed this race I have done it before so knew what to expect it’s got a few hilly bits so it’s not really a flat course but I liked the challenge they added it’s still possible to get a good time the positive was there was water in bottles which I always prefer and I think the crowd support was great on this course loads of cheering which really helped I will do this event again next year I thought the marshals did a great job as well

Not as flat as advertised, great organisation

I did not realise how big this race was until I got on the train at 07:35 towards Working and could not get a seat.

Thousands of runners with very good facilities, fantastic marshalls, local supporters and a great team of pacers.

My only caveats would be that for the price, a finisher's t-shirt should be expected for that price and that the race is not as flat as advertised, miles 8 to 12 had a few ups and downs that made it a bit tougher than anticipated.

The pacers were fantastic and the roads were closed, which is a must for a race of this size, I was bumping elbows with the pack following the 1h40m pacers pretty much all the way to the end. You'll never run alone.

Overall

Hi,

I had done this race in past when first on , Guildford to Woking. This time it was part of my Brighton Marathon . Very user friendly for first timers. However, should be age group prizes even if just first in age. Thats my only criticism. Also why just list 5 k results -as "all categories" this doesnot make any sense. Additionally the 5k wasnot a licened race so doesnot count for rankings.

Despite this weell done.

A very decent half

Surrey Half Marathon

I don’t often run half marathons these days but a friend wanted to do one and I said I’d run it with her and hopefully pave her to a PB. It’s fair to say that The Surrey Half didn’t disappoint.

Being London based it was easy to get the train to Woking and the race village is no more than a 10 minute walk and marshalled directed you from the station.

The race village itself was big with plenty of toilets. The queue for the baggage drop was pretty big but kept moving and all in all there was plenty of space. The start area was great with clearly marked zones depending on the time you were aiming for and it didn’t feel cramped.

I have to admit I wasn’t expecting much from the course (expecting to run around Woking) but it’s full of surprises. It takes you out of town onto some very pleasant country roads and there was plenty of support on route. The course itself is pretty flat so PB worthy and my friend proved this by knocking nearly 4 minutes of hers with a 1:41:30.

Post race there is plenty of room in the baggage area and space to change and stretch. There are also plenty of places to grab a coffee and a bite to eat.

Overall I was very impressed with the whole event. It’s well organised, with a good course. Whether looking for your first half marathon or wanting to run a quick time I’d definitely recommend The Surrey Half.

Amazing!

Such a well organised event. This was my first time and I was so amazed by how well run the event was. The atmosphere at Woking Leisure Centre before and after was fantastic and the support along the way from those at the water stations, the bands and choir and local support was second to none. Thoroughly great event and I would recommend it to anyone!

Enjoyable race

I enjoyed running this race.  There was a mix of flat and hilly parts to the route with plenty of water stations along route.  The bag drop was very busy at the beginning and I had to queue 10-15 minutes to drop off my bag but I collected it straight away after the race.  The race had a good, fun atmosphere and I would definitely run it again.

Lack of toilets en route and water

Should have been more than 1 toilet at each toilet stop as there was always a queue. I lost 8 minutes queuing for a toilet at the water station between miles 6 and 7. Also, water had run out at the 3rd to last and penultimate water stations when I reached them. I was by no means the slowest runner there were plenty of people behind me who would have needed water too. Just 1 more toilet at each stop and more water and I would have given it 5/5. Disappointing.

Woking local - 2018 Surrey half

The race was very well organized, staff and marshalls were friendly before and most importantly after the race which was very much appreciated because I was in a lot of pain!

I enjoyed the course. It was easy to follow and I did not feel it was too crowded at any point. Overcrowding is something I've experienced in most races, but the Surrey Half was fine!

One thing that definitely needs improvement are the water stations. More people need to be handing out water because I nearly had to stop at 2 of the water stations to make sure I could get a water bottle! I also heard that they ran out of water at one of the stations later in the race, which is pretty poor. Additionally, if you are going to threaten dissqualification for littering, then there needs to be more bins! It seems there were only about 5 bins over 100m after the water stations and then there was no where to throw them way. There were not nearly enough places to bin the water bottles!

And finally, would be nice to get Lucozade at the end instead of more tiny water bottles. Also a race-tshirt would be nice!

Overall this was a great race. I will particiate again next year!

Great race with a lovely encouraging atmosphere

This was my second half marathon but I was highly impressed with the oganisation of the event. Arrived about an hour before the HM race started and watched the 5k race before swiftly and easily dropping off our bags and exploring the race villiage.Plenty of toilets and lots of refreshment options around.

I was a little worried the start would be very crowded as I knew it was a bigger event than any other I've been in, but I wqas actually so surpised that by the time I had been shuffled around to the start line, I was already able to start jogging along and very quickly was abale to establish my pace and have a clear path.

The support from the local coomiyt was brilliant despite the interupttions we may have been casuign them due to their closed roads. The bands and choirs en-route were fanastic and enouraging, I could feel such a mental boost every time I passed one.

I'm not familar with the area and I don't drive so I wouldn't have usually had a chance to see some of the roads I was running along so it was nice seeing some sights. The water stations were well spaced out and big shout out to the numerous offers of Jelly Babies from spectators!

The medal was lovely and big (although I am aware there is a mistake on it with the listed distance of the kids run) and the protein flapjacks, banana, water and oranges were much appricated for refuelling!

Hoping to retun next year, although I'll be keepig an eye out for the possibility of discounted entry rates since although it was a great event, it was quite pricey for a student such as myself.

Surrey Half

Surrey Half Marathon

Another great Surrey Half Marathon event completed. The course had changed from 2014 which was originally an out and back from Guildford to Woking.

Very scenic route once again, although there are a few cheeky inclines which makes this more than a ‘flat’ billing.

The feed stations could have offered some form of fruit or gel as well in addition to the water to assist runners.

Overall though a very friendly well run event, which I will do again.

Impressive stuff

I’ve run a lot of the big half’s and this is right up there. From the moment of arrival it was slick organisation - loads of space for bags, plenty toilets, the list would go on to cover all aspects.

The course itself is lovely, quickly into the countryside, but still enough pockets of support and bands banging out tunes to make the atmosphere very good.

Plenty undulations  without it being hilly, so pretty fast overall. A pretty serious elite field now as well, which was great to see.

Fun but a few niggles

The race had a nice route with varied surroundings of having countryside and towns but route was more hilly than I had expected but this wasn't too bad.  The race was expensive compared to other halves. I am a slower runner and so was near the back and people had started to pack up, which is just demoralising.  I was under the 3 hour bracket for finishing (which we are told is the cut off), but when people are packing up before this, how is that fair? The bag drop in the morning had a huge queue, it reduced quickly but perhaps a quicker system needed next year as we missed the warm up as were dropping off our bags! Many of the water stations ran out of water, some runners chose to wait 5/10 minutes for the water to arrive, but water could have reached us quicker.  At the half way point, there was only one toilet? Need more.   Last thing, the medals! I really don't think it is fair that a person doing a 5k race has exactly the same medal as people doing a half marathon which has on it 'Surrey Half' in big letters.... how does that work? Made me feel my efforts were somewhat not appreciated. A good fun race with great organisation in the main but the things above need addressing.  The bands around the route were fabulous!!!

Well Organised Race with Great PB Potential

It was my first time running the Surrey Half and it's a race I really enjoyed.

The organisation of the event both before and during the race was top notch. It starts and finishes from Woking leisure centre which was about a 20 min walk from the town centre where there was plenty of places to park.

It's described as a fast and flat course and most of it is pretty flat but there were a few inclines along the way and I my legs certainly felt the ones closer to the finish.

The route takes you out of Woking on country lanes towards Guildford before returning back to the leisure centre. I think they said that there was around 5000 to 6000 people participating in the half marathon and this did make it feel quite crowded especially during the first half of the course where we were running in just a single lane. You had to take care not to trip on someone else and this made overtaking a little difficult.

There were plenty of Xempo pacers and I stuck with the 1:40 funbus, which pushed me to a new PB.

The local support was great, especially in those important last few miles. Your first name was printed on your race number making it easy for the crowds to shout out your name as you approached them.

There were plenty of volunteers and the leisure centre sports hall was used for the bag drop. There wasn't a huge amount going on in the event village, which was the leisure centre car park but that didn't bother me.

I would certainly consider coming back to this race another year.

Top marks

It’s easy to find faults with anything if you try hard...you’d have to try very hard in the case of the Surrey Half. Great marshals, superb local support (ignore the minority moaners), nice course, mostly flat with a few inclines. One moan; the runners who ignored requests to put empty water bottles in the bins provided. They should have been DQd as threatened as their actions do not reflect well on running. My entry will be in again for 2019

Want a good experience for your first ever half marathon?

Surrey Half Marathon

I was fortunate enough to get a place in the 5th Surrey Half Marathon. This was a big shock. Unfortunately none of my friends entered.

I only started running ‘properly’ in November 2017. I couldn’t run 2km before Christmas without stopping or moaning...

I tried to train in the interim but a bad foot injury and snow hampered my efforts. Before I knew it, the Surrey Half Marathon had arrived.

“You’ll be fine!”, “I’ve heard it’s well organised and a flat course” said my friends. “Go have fun - it’s your victory lap after all!” (I’d be fine. Right?!)

“13.1 miles? Do you have a day to complete it? It’s an awfully long way!” said people who heard I had entered. “We won’t be ashamed if you need to pull out - none of us are particularly sporty” said Dad. (Talk about pressure. I had wanted to compete it within the 3 hour period.)

If I’m honest I hardly slept for about 3 nights before. Dreaming your lost and needing the loo counts as an anxiety dream.

I wasn’t too sure what to expect if I’m honest. What do you take on a half marathon? How early do you arrive?

However, the organisation of this event very clear. It was helpful to have the Race Day Guides and the kind folks on Race Check and UK Run Chat helped.

The marshalls from the station and sign helped me find my way. The bag storage and toilets were quick and easy to navigate and it was clear a lot of effort went into the event village and warmup routine (although I was trying to conserve my energy as far as possible!).

Approaching the start I was very nervous - all the other runners looked like proper athletes. There was me - someone who didn’t run regularly in events. However, once my nerves died down and I settled back into a near normal pace, I loved every minute of it.

Before I knew it the 3 mile marker had approached and I was sipping on my first bottle of water. Very refreshing. The cheers from the crowd made me feel like I wasn’t on my own and the bands all helped boost my spirits!

Unfortunately there was an issue with water delivery at the next 2 stops but the organisers were trying their best to rectify this. Luckily I had spare sports drink in my bag which I offered a few runners.

Around the 7 mile mark I started talking to a man who was struggling with his leg. He was also getting disheartened by his time. His colleagues had left him and it didn’t help that a marker was indicating that Mo Farah could run the distance in well under half the time we made it in. However, we supported each other around  to at least the 11 mile mark. I hadn’t realised quite how supportive the running community is!

I want to thank the organisers, all of the volunteers and people supporting us on the streets throughout Woking in spite of the threat of rain. Without your big smiles, cheering and clapping and nibbles (especially jelly/sweets and fruit) I probably would not have had the energy to get round as quickly as I did. In fact, 1 lady cheered me on when I started to walk and I knocked a clear 19.5 minutes off the overall time I thought I would make it in!

I would definitely recommend this event to other people entering - especially new runners who are on their own. I felt so out of place when I arrived but before I knew it I was high-fiving the supporters and motivating others to keep going.

However, the route was not quite as flat as I had been led to believe. Walking up the hills and running down them however seemed a useful compromise!

A good selection of fruit and energy bars, and a massive medal, were awaiting me at the finish line. This was together with medical personnel and massage therapists - which I didn’t use fortunately!

Unfortunately I could not book anywhere for any of the particular deals on the day but maybe I’ll be more organised next year. (Yes, you see, I will be entering this event again!)

First Time Runner 2018

Its a really fun race with good support as you go round considering it is quite rural in places.  Really easy to follow and a good atmosphere.  The website isn't great which made it a bit difficult to find info before hand but was really easy on the day.

Very disappointed

First time I have done this event but have done many other running events in the past. I was disgusted with the lack of water throughout the race. I had water at mile 4, then at mile 7 they had run out, at mile 10 they had run out so I ran 7 miles without any water as it wasn’t until just after mile 11 that we got any water. So it seemed unless your a fast runner, you weren’t as important to get any water. People were very distressed by this and at one point I spoke to a paramedic because I was so concerned. Lucky this wasn’t a warmer day as I feel the consequences would have been much much worse! Bad organisation and communication. Very disappointed.

Hi Lily, were sorry the water had ran out by the time you made it there, we base our water distribution from the previous years figures and you all seemed to be a lot thirstier this year compared to previous years. Hopefully you'll give us a second chance in 2019.

Great race through the Surrey countryside

Really enjoyed the race, the support was fantastic all around the course and the locals really spurred me on when I was a bit knackered at the end.

Organisation was good and the bag drop was quick and easy, didn't haver to queue long for the toilets either, there were a few queues but by walking a bit further down the row you'd find ones with only one or two people queuing.

The actual race itself was great, a bit hillier than expected but no serious climbs, one slight issue however was a bit of disorganisation with the water distribution at water stops - they seemed a bit slow to unpack water bottles in advance at times, at one stop me and a few others had to stop and queue to get water while they unwrapped them - so maybe could've done with a few more volunteers manning them.

Other than that, it was a great day and the bands were great as well. Really nice trip to Surrey.

Well organised and easy to get to

It's nice to have a race that's easy to get to for those travelling by train - with only a short 10minute walk away.

Race was well organised and well supported by locals throughout the course.

Would definitely consider entering again next year.

My First Half Marathon. Loved it!

The course was great (thought the out and back along the A320 is pretty gruelling!) and the spectators and live bands along the way really put a smile on my face. A few hills in the 2nd half of the course were a challenge!

A brilliant touch was adding the runner's name to the bib number. That way spectators were encouraging us all by name. "you can do it Rick!" is way better than "You can do it!".

My only critisism is that the 2nd to last water station ran out of water before I got to it. They were mostly packed up by the time I got there. It made the next couple of miles really tough.

Overall a great event. I'll be looking at doing more events by AAT in the future!

My First Surrey Half Marathon

Thanks Surrey Half Marathon Team!

I loved the run and got myself a PB - Whoop! Although my watch clocked it at 13.2.

The course was easy to navigate, well marshalled and there was lots of local support! The staff that I spoke to (mostly at the finish line) were lovely!

The only thing I didn't like was the sheer amount of wasted plastic caused by the handing out of bottles at every water station (and there were quite a few) most people took one mouthful and chucked them.

I didn't need any water until around 10miles and unfortunately I couldn't bring myself to take a bottle seeing how many had already littered the water stop areas - I would like to see plastic waste minimised if possible.

I did like the notices of disqualification if people were caught littering and saw much less litter at this event than you do at others. Great idea! I hope this was followed through with if necessary.

Race packs were sent out nice and early – which I love, because I hate a wonky number and I like my new banana buff – thank you.

I will be back in 2019!

Thanks for the review Kerrieanne, we are always looking into way to reduces our waste especially plastic but we find that for the less elite runners offering bottles is far better than the plastic cups which most marathons offer as they often want more than 1 cup. Well done on the PB and we look forward to seeing you in 2019!

Extremely poorly organised

This is the first time I've run this race, and I was drawn in by the promise of a flat course that had been voted best road race. My expectation weren't sky high, but I was excited for a good race. However, the result was very different.

The race pack which arrived contained only my number, no further information. This you had to go to the website for, which was a ttimes difficult to navigate. It wasn't a problem, but it's not a big job to print out a sheet to state start times and parkling locations. It felt like an oversight.

Once at the race, the start pens were disorganised, and you were left to hope you were in the right areas. The race started out well, but went downhill quickly for me. I found the course to be very unudulating, not flat. But worst of all - THEY RAN OUT OF WATER!

I'm not a fast runner, but my the time myself and others reched the second water station (10k in) they had run out. By the time we reached the third (15k in) there was still no water, and volunteers were digging through the bins for half full bottles to give to us. Yep, in order to have water we had to drink from other peoples bottles. Still no water at the fourth water stop. Only at about mile 11.5 did they manage to get us water that wasn't fished out of the bin. Keeping in mind the last stocked water stop was at 3 mies, that is almost 8 miles without water provided!

By the time I finished (2.43, slow due to no water) they were already taking down the 'event village' (two food trucks and some other stands). There were still hundreds of finishers after me.

If you want to be a good race - don't make the slow runners feel like they don't matter!

Very disappointed, and won't be doing this race ever again.

The Surrey Half was a great race, it was really well organised, bag drop was great and there were lots of toilets available

The Race itself was great, local support was lovely, lots of locals in their drives giving us claps and cheers!

I stayed with the 2:20 pacers who were amazing and I can in with a PB, taking over 5 mins off my time

Medal is lovely, shame that there was no tshirt, making the entrance fee quite steep.

But this is definitely a race Id do again in the future

Great local event, not sure if it's value for money though

This is the third year I've run this event. It's a great one for seeing the local area, with great crowds. Was great that the organisers added more toilets this year for before/after the race.

It's just a shame that it feels you don't get value for money at £38 which feels a tad expensive- you get a medal, some water and a protein bar/fruit. Would be nice if a t-shirt was made available either thrown in or available at a reduced price for runners.

A decent run

Event Village was fantastic. Route was undulating but fair - I ran a big PB but there were lots of gentle ups and downs (nothing major). Atmosphere was great. Goody bag and freebies at the end were excellent.

Only negatives:

1) I asked a question twice on social media (using multiple platforms including Facebook and Twitter) but nobody answered my questions.

2) The queue for baggage drop was absolutely huge. Thankfully I didn’t need to use this service but a review of this system might be worthwhile for next year.

A big busy well organised race. Had pacers at most times unfortunately I was aiming for 1hr35 so midway between 1hr30 and 1hr40 pacers so selfishly would have loved a 1hr35 pacer!

Lots of local support, few small hills, but overall a quick race as all on closed roads.

A PB for me so a race with PB potential for sure, would be keen to run this one again!

Half Marathon on my Doorstep

I love running the Surrey Half, not just because it's my local race, but also due to the great support from local people. The first time I ran it in 2014, it took me a smidge under 2 hours. Today I ran it in 1.42. The course is not compltely flat, but the inclines are very gentle and don't go on very long. The aid stations are well stocked with water, and if you need an extra pick me up, there are always friendly locals giving out Jelly Babies.

I highly recommend this Race. It is well organised and very accessible, and includes a 5k option and a kids race.

Looking forward to doing it again next year.

Fantastic organisation, stunning scenery!

This is one of the best half marathon races I've ever run. The organisation is just flawless! Couldn't fault anything! There are a huge number of portaloos due to which queueing is almost non existent! Drinks stations have bottles of water as opposed to cups which is absolutely fantastic as most other road races opt for the latter and it's hard to drink from a cup while trying to run. The scenery is just spectacular, the route almost as flat as a pancake. It's extremely non-chaotic at the bag drop off and collection. Plus with a donation you can get a post race massage. Only small comment - perhaps a gel could have been handed at one of the miles towards the end of the half marathon. Really can't fault anything else and can't recommend this race highly enough! All round five stars for a superb race day from start to finish. Many thanks guys! :-)

Great run

This is the 4th time I've done the race and I would thoroughly recommend it.  Weather was a bit unfortunate this year but Woking leisure centre offers plenty of space to shelter before or change out of wet things after.  Organisation was very smooth, marshalls were very encouraging even in the rain.  Plenty of local support along the course and great planning to find such a picturesque course fitting in between Guildford and Woking.  I'd prefer a slightly later start time but not a major issue as I live and easy cycle ride from the start.

A well organised race with a good atmosphere.  Almost 4,000 participants in the half marathon but it didn't seem too crowded.   The course itself is fairly flat, with some small hills and the odd tight corner.  Having the roads completely closed to traffic is a big plus.

Managed to get around in 1:20, despite the heavy rain.  The course definitely has PB potential.   Overall I would recommend running it.

Good Run, bad toilets

The race was well organised and safe to run - police were present meaning there were no issues from the road closures, like I have experience in other races

Unfortuntely the only thing letting the race down was the cleanliness of the portaloos - I appreciate these are never luxury! however attending many races they are always bareable. However these were disgusting. I tried 3 different loos and ended up vomitting. Not great pre-half marathon prep

Good route, pleasant roads, well-coordinated

2017 was my 4th running and the event keeps getting better. Keeping the both the start and finish in Woking is definitely the way to go. The course is very pleasant:  no car traffic, good mix of straight-aways and curves, some gentle hills.  My only gripe is that the finish is rather flat and straight which, to me personally, isn't as dramatic as Dorking or Basingstoke or Reading finishes.  Still, I'd rate this as a very appealing race.

Not quite at the usual standard

I've done every Surrey half marathon since its first iteration in Guildford 3 years ago. Since then the field size has grown massively and this was the first year that the race has shown signs of struggling with its popularity (presumably down the to well earned reviews on racecheck).

In terms of the race itself, it's a relatively flat course, with only 3 or 4 inclined to speak of, and definitely one for a PB. Once past about 1.5 miles or so it's a quiet setting and relatively picturesque in places, although the long out-and-back section on the Egley road is marginally soul-destroying!

There are normally quite a few  a people dotted  a around the course, although local support wasn't so good this year, presumably because the naff weather put a lot of people off.

There are water stations in sensible locations around the course, although certainly as a faster runner i cant help but think the provision of bottles rather than cups is wasteful, as myself and many people around me take one mouthful before dropping them. I guess this is down to personal preference - you can't please everyone!

Further back in the field the width of the course looked a bit narrow on the aforementioned out-and-back back section, with a number of runners spilling over onto the opposite side of the cones where the field hadn't quite split up enough.

The main issue i had was at the start area - while the start pens were clearly marked with expected finish times a pacers, i struggled to find a way in without jumping over the fence. No-one was allocated a specific pen to go to, so it was a bit of a free for all, so as someone who was aiming for a sub-1:20 finish it was frustrating to find myself so boxed in near the start, as i was unable to get nearer the front.

To be fair to the organisers, there were a lot of toilets provided at the start, although there still seemed to be queues, and although i personally didn't use it the queue for the bag drop looked a bit chaotic.

Overall this is definitely an event worth doing (especially if you're after a PB), and this year's medal was much better than last year's (where the sponsors logo was as big as the rest of the medal). If you're not local beware that you'll have to park in town about 15-20 mins from the start because of the road closures.

Posted on 17.03.17

Glenn thanks for the thorough review, you've raised some great points. Our feedback suggests that the vast majority of runners prefer the sports cap water bottles rather than cups. Although many runners won't drink all the water, others will.

We have already started re-designing the event village area for 2018 to improve the start pens, as well as issuing colour-coded race numbers.

Glad you loved the medal - hope that you'll be back on 11th March 2018!

First Timer doing 5K

My husband and I signed up to the 5K as this is the first race we have done and we are both in the Veteran category shall we say!

The timing of the race was early but we had no problem with bag drop (in fact we were there before they had finished setting up).

The course was nice, good support from public (although not too many around at 8am) but marshalls and the band we passed were great.

We are quite slow runners but we managed a personal best so that was great.  Would recommend it to anyone wanting a first time run as well as seasoned runners who don't want to do the half marathon.

I enjoyed the event a lot.  I stayed with a friend the night before so that I could get to the race at a good time in the morning.  We arrived on site at 7.30 and that gave us good time to get ready, go to the indoor loo, drop our bags, have a gentle jog around the park to warm up, go to the portaloos and then get into the race pens.  That bit was not ideal because we couldn't easily get to the pace pen we wanted to.  I am not sure how well other people managed with bag drop etc because when my friend and I were ready to get into the pens (8.45 for a 9am start) there was a huge queue for bag drop.  We wondered if everyone got to the start on time.  The run itself was nice; through the woods but on roads, nice to see daffodils :) The local support was great and there was a good mix of time without support and time with support.  I didn't use the water stations (I use a camelbak) but these seemed well spaced.  I personally would prefer cups were used instead of bottles; the wastage is terrible with bottles and they are more dangerous to runners than cups (I kicked a few and had to jump over some).  I didn't find the course hilly but had plotted it on mapmyrun before doing it and knew that it had similar climbs to my local runs so I think i was well prepared.  I did hear some people complaining about the hills ,which I would say were maybe long and gradual, so I guess it depends on what you are used to.  Finally, I would have liked to see a longer slow down/cool down area after the finish line - it is not good to stop moving so soon after the finish line.  I think all race courses could do better with this and provide at least a mile of slow down before the participants have to stop - at Surrey the food, medals etc meant that within 20m of the finish line everyone had ground to a halt because there wasn't space to do anything else.  This was my first half and I was very happy with my time (1hr 56) and I think the course helped because it was not too hilly and there was enough space for people to run - groups did get a bit bunched up sometimes but not too much.

Thanks for the review Jeni, you've raised some great points - a cool down area is a great idea. We'll have to chat to the council and find out if we can use the park or something...

Fun run with great atmosphere

I have run the Surrey Half Marathon event three times now and each time I have been very pleased by the great atmosphere. The race starts and finishes in Woking Park and the combination of a live band playing and great commentary creates a buzz not always present at other events. Local support is great with loads of people lining parts of the route and cheering you on. There is more live music along the route to keep your spirits up and plenty of water stations to keep you hydrated. The huge number of marshals and other volunteers at the event is fabulous and shows how well organised the Surrey Half is. Woking Park is close to the train station and Woking town centre so transport and car parking are no problem. It's quite likely I will continue to enter this event in future years.

A brilliant local race!

As always (this is my third time running in this event), the Surrey Half was seamlessly organised. It was quick and easy to drop off bags, pop to the loo and head straight into a well-signed corral. The volunteers were friendly, cheerful and enthusiastic despite the weather, the local support was second to none, the route was lovely (though I'm biased, being a local!) and the medal was well worth the effort. The one downside was the lack of goodies on offer at the finish line, given the cost of the event, but regardless of that I'll be coming back year on year!

Great Half Marathon

This was my second time doing this race having completed it in 2016.

Great buzz on race day arrived 15 minutes before the actual start of the race as I live locally so have no experience in relation to bag drop off and parking in the area or finding a place to stay over night before race day.

The route was the same as 2016 so I knew what I was going to come up against.

Was hoping to beat my last time but hamstring injury prevented me from going a bit faster that last year I was only one minute slower so not to bad .

It was a rainy day so not as many supporters out as there was in 2016 but still got cheered on all the way around.

Having your name on your number bib is good so the 2Hr 30Min runners (me) get cheered on and it motivates you when you hear somebody shouting out your name giving you encouragement to keep going.

This year there was portable loos at each water station which was good.( I didnt need them but good to know they are there)

The medal is brilliant loved it . Cant wait to see nexts years design as I hope to run it again in 2018.

I would maybe like to see more activities for kids who are there on race day with their parents who wait around for people in the race.

As there is nothing there it gets a bit boring for them waiting around.

But all in all a great race event.

Great Medal

Good course

Great support.

If you are going to run a half Marathon try the Surrey Half its a flat fast course and good for beginners (like Myself)

You wont be disappointed

See you all in 2018

Even the heavy rain did not put a damper on the atmosphere

This is my 3rd Surrey half and it was a lot wetter this year. Loads of people came out to cheer despite this fact and the running crowd were all in good spirit. The addition of several live bands was nice and the overall organisation was excellent. My queue for toilet visit number 5 (my problem) 15 mins before the official start was suprisingly quick. The finishers medal is also blingtastic! Mr T (from the A-Team) has already made enquiries to take it off my hands. I pitty the fool that tries to take my medal!!  I also personally took 3 minutes off my PB which was a pleaseant suprise. looking forward to going sub 100 minutes next year!

Great race again!

Thanks all at aat.events, thoroughly enjoyed Surrey Half 2017. I like the cool, damp weather for running so suited perfectly! Great to have somewhere warm and dry to change afterwards  - perfect at the leisure centre. Thanks to the marshalls and bag checkers, the marshalls put in a good shift given the weather - much easier to be running and keeping warm. Good support out on the course, again despite the weather. Chunky medal, plenty of water at the end. I will be back next year.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

A) Information for race day was very well communicated and it was nice to receive your race number in the post which isn't always the case.

B) the course is scenic, with nice countryside views.

C) roads were all closed and the course was well marshalled.

D) the 1h50 pace maker was fantastic. Accurate and extremely encouraging. He even ran back and forth in the last few miles trying to get as many into the 1h50 finish time category.

Cons

A) the batching process for runners at the start based on estimated finish times wasnt very well organised. It was a bit of a free for all. Race numbers should be colour coded based on batches.

B) The start was way too congested, not a big enough space for the amount of runners

C) the first few km of the race is narrow and so with the very congested start, it takes a while for any space to free up to over take. I was very boxed in at the start.

D) although the race has nice countryside scenary, it offers little opportunity for support from the public, perhaps a route which is half outside Woking centre and half in would be better - although I understand this is difficult.

E) The medal was very underwhelming

All in all, a good race but could be great.

Great race (shame about the weather!)

Great race, thank you - and particularly to the marshals and volunteers who were out in the yucky weather.  The 1:50 pacer (for the short time I was able to keep up with him) was excellent, very chatty and helpful.

A couple of things for consideration next year:

- The water station manned by the army cadets at about 10km wasn't the best organised. No intended criticism of them as individuals, they were working really hard - but in the fleeting moment as I ran past they seemed to be struggling to keep up with the supply.  This was a key water station after 10km when probably most runners wanted water, so really needed to be slick, and I don't think there was enough of them to keep up. Also they weren't taking the lids off the water bottles, which meant the runners needed to do it - and when you got one of the blue bottles (see below comment) this wasn't easy.

- There seems to be two brands of bottles being offered. I picked up one of the blue ones - the lid was really difficult to get off, and even once off I then struggled to pull up the white cap such that I needed to use my t-shirt to get enough grip on the cap, and ended up accidentally dropping the bottle.......   So my point being that the bottles should be of a design that is easy for runners to use. (Sorry - first world problems!)

Other than that - all good!

The poor weather certainly contributed to less volunteers turning up as I'm sure you can understand. They were briefed to remove plastic caps from bottles as per previous years, so we will certainly look into this because we completely agree - by 10km runners want water ASAP!

That aside, glad you had a fantastic race. Hope you can join us on 11th March 2018!

1:30 PACER at Surrey Half

I was a last minute replacement Pacer for this event. The logistics are great for me, with the event being within walking distance of the station makes it very handy. It was a great atmosphere at the venue with a live band banging out some great tunes. There was an abudance of toilets in my view but invariably there is alway a queue for that last bit of personal admin!

The Half Marathon runners had to wait for the finish line to be vacated by the 5k runners which didn't present any dramas. The Pens were snug but as a runner you felt safe that no one other than runners were going to be on the course for the opening stretch. I ran this last year and the sun was shining...this year not so much. As we lined up the weather was perfect light drizzle with a whisper of wind but nothing of concern. The race was underway on time and despite the damp conditions the crowds were out in force cheering the runners onward.

Unfortunately the heavens opened at 2 miles and I think I would have stayed drier jumping into a swimming pool, however the rain didn't last too long. One grumble was I felt the mile markers were abit out again. I recalled this being an issue that was raised by Pacers last year and unfortunately again I was not alone in finding some of the markers a tad out! The turn at about 6 miles was a bit dicey being wet and quite sharp. There was plenty of support on the course from locals and several bands/music stations. Jelly babies being handed out and smiling marshalls despite the down pour! The finish straight was great with spectators a plenty cheering you on. The course itself is pleasant a couple of small hills nothing that'd spoil your pace.

Overall really enjoyed being part of the event yet again. All marshalls and event staff were great.

Better than last year but...

The mile markers appeared to be in the correct places this time however...The 10km was marked on both sides of the roads so people at 5.5 miles thought they had reached 10km and I passed many who were celebrating the "fastest ever time for 10km".  Some even slowed down because they were going too fast.  This was very poor, the 10km banner should not have been on the wrong side of the course.  Also marshalls saying only a mile to go at 11.5 miles isn't helpful as the group I was running with thought we had missed the 12 mile marker and only had a mile to go.  Imagine how demoralising it is to then reach the 12 mile marker several minutes later!  Your stations should offer something other than water.  It's too far to go on just water.  Other runs offer gels, sports drinks, sweets etc.  Finally, your pacers were too fast, I came in at 2:36 and had tried to keep pace with the 2:30 pacers but they had come in about 12 minutes before me.

Hi RC

Thanks so much for taking the time to review our event.

We have looked into the placement of the 10k markers and can confirm that the 10k mile marker was on the correct side of the course, but there was a double sided DB MAX flag...? Sorry to hear that this affected your race strategy though.

We will certainly consider offering gels in future events, though we understand that most runners prefer to organise their own because not all gels/foods are suitable for every runner and can actually have an adverse effect! There were a number of people handing out sweets along the course though - sorry if you missed them.

We invite Xempo's professional pacing team to take part in the event. As we understand it, they will maintain a regular pace throughout the event. I do appreciate that other runners may prefer to adopt a different race strategy (eg negative splits) which can mean it's difficult to run with pacers throughout, but we are confident that the pacers finished within their advertised time, not 12 minutes ahead of schedule.

I hope this answers some of your points. Hope you can join us on 11th March 2018!

Great support made the difference

Overall a well organised event and great to have so much local support on a not-very-nice day.  Water stations were a bit short (missed the first one completely) and not very frequent at the start and more frequent at the end which seemed the wrong way round to me. But overall, really happy to have participated.  Had a nightmare trying to get out of Woking afterwards.  I know they had to close roads during the event but not sure why they still needed to be closed at 1.30pm.  Aside from that, a great day.

Great local course

As our local half marathon it is firstly very convenient! The course is well marshalled and signposted so there is no chance of getting lost! The pre and post race organisation is fantastic and everything went smoothly.

The course itself is undulating and between miles 7-11 had some inclined that were surprisingly sapping of energy. It is a quick course and whilst not flat, there is definite PB potential. I will try to make it a regular run for me as it is ideally timed leading up to both the spring marathons and the road league season. Well done to all involved!

3rd time running Surrey Half

This was my 3rd Surrey Half out of the 4 years it has been running, last year I marshalled, on the mile 12 water station which was also a fantastic experience giving something back to our running community.

This is a well organised race, plenty of information given in the lead up, nice to have the famous Surrey Half buff each year (and to recognise it in other races). Great idea to incorporate a 5k just before the Half. Brilliant to have small water bottles given out at the aid stations instead of ridiculous cups - take not BRIGHTON marathon!

Fantastic to get almost immediate results and also have 10K split times.

The course itself is slightly undulating with plenty of water stations manned by enthusiatic marshals, mile 12 water station being the loudest! Just when you need it.

Only one slight negative for me, was running on the A320 (out and back loop) which is coned into two halves; the sheer volume of runners on one side meant some runners did have to spill onto the outside of the cones watching out for the faster runners coming towards them in the opposite direction. Not sure how you would tweak that, as that's quite a long stretch of the course.

On a personal note, I still preferred the inaugural Surrey Half in 2014 where it started in Guildford and ran to Woking and then back to Guildford with the idea of alternating the start between Guildford and Woking each year. There was certainly more to look at from a runner's perspective instead of another leafy quiet road.

The timing of the event is perfect in leading up to spring marathons in April.

We'll certainly be raising your point about the A320 in our debrief to determine whether the route is now at capacity, or whether adjusting the start pens could positively impact the spread of the runners later on in the course. Please keep an eye out on aat-events.com for future races which may incorporate Guildford-based road runs.

This is a large race, but very well organised. The marshalls and volunteers at the water stations are friendly and supportive and ready to give water easily. Lots of great support from local residents and nice to have live music too. Really like getting a buff, very useful and design great, as is this year's medal. The kids race is also well organised and enjoyable, great to include children and get them fired up for running! Really enjoyed the Battle Oats bar at the end - much tastier than last year's sawdust! Only downside is volume of litter, more bins might help.

2nd time & I'll be back

I ran my 2nd Surrey Half yesterday, & once again thoroughly enjoyed it. It wasn't my fastest half - that honour belongs to my 1st Surrey in 2015 - but I did prove to myself that I can still give it a decent go. This is a fast course - a few small gradients, but otherwise flat. The start, at Woking Leisure Centre, is well organized, & the course pretty scenic. I am slightly biased as I used to live in Old Woking & we twice run past the top of my old road! There are quiet areas without much support, but you'd expect that anywhere other than a town centre race. Along with Brighton, this is my favourite half, & all the while I can, I'll continue to do both.

A top day for Barefeet and Fridges

A massive thank you to the race organisers for the invite to travel up from the Northeast to take part in this race alongside my good buddy Tony the Fridge.

The atmosphere from the very beginning was one of amazing kindness that makes a big difference. All along the way the supporters braved the rain and it was appreciated. Loved the splodging  in the puddles with my bare feet and getting a cool down at the same time.

Thank you everyone involved with the race, we all know that great races dont happen by chance but by a lot of hard work for months and months before and then when everybody go's home. Happy memories and new friends made is my kinda race. Big love Paul

Organisation good; pacers great; atmosphere meh

Presumably the organisers read this, so I want to give some constructive feedback.

Overall the race was a good one, but the weather (as always) can make or break an event and the organisers did as well as they could considering that it was such a miserable day.  I see only 3669 finishers, which suggests that almost 1500 didn't bother turning up since it was advertised as having 5k+ runners.

First the good:-

Start/finish, chip time, closed roads, fast course - check.  For a regular runner or anyone wanting a PB, this ticked all the boxes.

Pacers were brilliant.  I ran with the 1h40 pair who were vocal and encouraging all the way.  My mate said the same about the 1h30 pair too. Don't know where you find them, or how much you pay them, but they are a great addition to the race.  Bang on with their splits too - much better than the amateurs I've seen at other big events.

Logistics were sound from entry, race packs, baggage, food & water on the course, plus marshalls were all great in spite of the rain.

Constructive feedback:-

This race was just like so many others.  ie, start at the edge of a town at the crack of dawn on a Sunday, run round in the sticks where nobody lives for a couple of hours, then pick up your bag and go home, whilst the people of the town probably don't even know there's an event going on.
It seems to be the event default in the UK to have your race at a time and location that panders to the minimal inconvenience of residents & motorists, and maximum inconvenience to the paying participant. This is the fault of councils I suspect who are blind to the benefits of having a big event on (ie, loads of supporters and participants coming into town and spending money on food, parking, hotels etc), not the race organisers.

Bath half (on the same day) started at 11am and went through the centre of Bath, and was hugely supported.  Reading half is the same, in that it goes through Reading and has massive crowd support.  London marathon the same (x 100), and London seems to cope with roads being closed.  People manage.

If Surrey half truly wants to grow, it needs a course (and a start time) that allows people to really get out and support it.  It's almost as if Woking are embarrassed to have an event, and want it tucked away and cleared up before anyone notices it's happened.  I don't mind because I'm a regular runner and do a lot of races, but must be quite disappointing if your'e a beginner or a first timer, entering as much for the experience as for the challenge or for a time.

After the race, I'm not bothered about medals/t-shirts/bananas, but get that some people are.  As it was cold I went straight to pick up my bag and went home as there was nothing to hang about for.  No event village other than a couple of coffee vans, but no incentive to go back out into the rain.  Why not have something indoors in the sports centre?  Create a post race atmosphere where people can eat/drink share their experience.  Organisers might even be able to sell other events, or merchandise too.

One small thing; at the beginning there was a guy on a mike trying to give out information, but nobody could hear him as there was an annoying rock band playing too loudly about 2 feet away from the starting pen.  Have one or the other.  Not both.

Hope that doesn't sound negative, as I had a good race.  But without changes to the event experience, there will never be more than 3-4000 runners when there are so many other half marathons around at the same time.

Hi David. Many thanks for your comments both positive and constructive. All these points are discussed at length every year with the council and it's great to hear these views directly from a runner.
Yes a balance is struck between residents, road access, people ravelling through Woking and the runners and we do have a significant number of other businesses and road users to accommodate too.
It's usual to have a 23% drop out, but not forgetting the 600 5K and 550 2k entrants, we end up with a lot of runners and their supporters.
David, please do keep in touch with us as we want our event to develop, and I hope we can use your ideas as a template.

Super Surrey Half

My first time running this half. My friend and I haven't run for years so this was our 'comeback' challenge and it didn't dissapoint despite the rain. Very well organised, lots and lots of support at the start and the duration of the scenic run. The locals clearly support this well. Great brass band SABE, army water stations, pubs open for water stations (and wee's!), some toilet stops and a great welcome back to the finish line with a heavy medal! Only downside was parking, had to walk what seemed like miles afterwards and the roads still closed a while after the last runners which caused a bit of mayhem but other than that, a great morning!

A great experience

I entered this race in October to get myself back into running - and I am so glad that I chose this event! The pre-race support and communication (on Facebook) has been really good. The event was well organised and well supported, even though it rained!

I'll be entering next year very soon :-)

First Race & Fabulous

Really enjoyed my first race. Pacers were excellent, motivational and fun. They really made my race.

Bag drop and organisation seemed really good but as a first race I don't have much to compare to.

supporters were great despite the grim weather and the live music along the route lifted the spirits. Will definitely come back next year, I'm hooked!

My first half and it was utterly enjoyable.
I did struggle in the last 3 miles, but my fellow runners were really encouraging even though they were very tired themselves.
I was planning to run only one half and then go back to the 10k or 10 miles but I think that I'd like to run this again! :)

I love this race - AAT do a fab job of organising, and this year there was an icreased amount of local support which is excellent - I just love it when families are out on their house fronts with jelly babies :)

Great conditions to run today (except from heavy rain in the first mile or so), and those tiny hills just keep you on your toes !

Fantastic run, great route, excellent support, well done Woking and well done AAT

Fab event for a first timer!

Great event, especially as a first timer.  Minor confusion over race packs and a 'goody' bag at the end would have been useful to hold all the bits and bobs but very minor gripes in the grand scheme of things. Can't wait to go again next year!

Great, well organised race

3rd time doing the Surrey. Organisation seemed slicker this year - good local publicity and road closures publicised well ahead of the day. Course and water stations well-marked.  Event village bigger this year.   Marshalls great and even though it was a rainy morning there was still plenty of support out on the course.  Would like to see a finishers T-shirt next year though.

Overcrowded and expensive

As per usual pen times seem to be a free for all and bare no resemblance to peoples actual pace, so the start is slow and passing those for the next few miles who clearly started outside their zone is hard work.

The course itself is just too narrow for most of the first 11k so passing slower runners is hard work. Water was ok for me and the marshals are as always excellent but if I'd paid nearly £40 for this race I'd be upset that the course is very boring with little support and cramped. Queues to get out of the finish funnel didn't help. And the medal - pure c**p - who's idea was it to go with chocolate coin gold !!!

I certainly wouldn't pay to run this, there are better alternatives in Surrey for sure.

Brian,

Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review. We'll raise your point about the start pens in our debrief - we will be improving these for next year. In turn, this should facilitate less crowding on the course.

Shame you thought the course was boring. We're planning on inviting more bands next year and will have to try and organise better weather - the rain proves very off-putting for bands who use electrical equipment.

The medal was actually my design (I'm Hollie). I was pretty proud of it to be honest, but we change the design each year so perhaps you'll prefer our 2018 medal.

Next year's event is on 11th March 2018. Check back in a year and you'll be sure to see some improvements.

Best Half Marathon - Dont' think so

Entered this on the basis of being voted one of the best half marathons about.

Good Stuff

  • Number was sent out so no faffing about prior to race
  • Bag drop off was efficent once you got in the building (I managed to go in via the exit - ooops)
  • Pre Race band was good fro atmosphere
  • Could hear the start and the bloke with the mic was actually heard and semi interesting
  • Course was completley closed road
  • Pretty scenic route
  • Both miles/km signposted

Bad Stuff

  • Disappointed with the medal - looks cheap
  • No goody bag?   Space blanket / banana / protein bar and water meant your arms were getting full once out of exit area
  • In view of the above it was expensive to enter
  • No T-shirt for that price?
  • No isotonic/sports drinks on course

In general it was a good race just marred by the cost and rewards at the finish. Felt slightly cheated especily when looking at medal from weymouth which was the alternative.

Mark,

Thanks for taking the time to give us a review. The awards that we have won are not endorsed, but were awarded to us as a direct result of voluntary reviews from runners who have taken part in the event before.

I'm sorry that you didn't like the medal - we can assure you that for that size and weight of medal they are not cheap! But we do change the design each year so fingers crossed that you'll prefer our 2018 design. :)

With regard to the goody bag we'll raise your request in our debrief. Along with the electric lead car and encouraging the use of public transport as just a couple of examples, not issuing plastic goody bags is just one of the ways we strive to be a zero-impact event. We have always upheld our promise to give our runners all the goodies without the bag, but we promise to discuss the provision of bags in our debrief.

Hope that answers some of your points - t-shirt and sports drinks will also be discussed.

Hopefully see you on 11th March 2018.

Wet, but flat and fast

My first half, so little by the way of comparison.

registration was simple, plenty of pre race info and decent social media sites for any queries.

Race pack was a simple affair with a number, baggage tag and a neck buff. There was a pre race expo which you could collect from, i didn't go but postal delivery was fine.

Race pack and instructions for the day were decent found the car parks directed easily enough and it was about a 10 min walk to the race.

start was set up well with pacers easily identifiable throughout the pack. Took about 4 mins to clear the start line, but gun and chip timing available so no big deal.

Course is pretty flat, few slight ramps but nothing major. It was heavy rain for most of the race, but still lot of local support out considering and lots of cheering and encouragement. Some of the local pubs you pass had bands to add to the atmosphere.

On return flapjack, banana and a quality medal. I get the impression the effort has gone in to to the medal so if you expect a lot of freebies then you will be disappointed. Live results up straight away as far as I could tell.

race village had a few stalls, but the weather made that a bit of a washout you could get your medal engraved, get a massage that sort of thing. Loads of toilets so no queues, and plenty of places to get a coffee etc

Needs changing

I have done the Surrey Half Marathon since its launch in 2014. The route has changed and improved throughout the years, however it feels that some changes are needed.

The race has grown significantly in the past two years, and in 2017 it felt that there were too many runners for the paths at least in the first 10k. The planners should also rethink the very long route at Guildford Road - again it was too narrow for the runners, and I had some of them pushing me to get through.

There were some problems in the water stations, where a lot of runners couldn't see the signs and would just have to suddenly try to reach a volunteer.

It is a good race overall - the weather didn't help this year and we didn't have a lot of supporters because of that.

First time Surrey Half 2017

Surrey Half Marathon

Overall great race. Registration was fine although AAT events number should be on website as I had to Google for the organiser.

Event village was great although wish race pack included further details of stalls.

Track itself was good, minimal potholes. Overhead signage for water stations and distances instead of just at the side of the road would've been helpful. Missed first water station. Loved the goodies at the end :).

I used the Glympse app and heard there are prizes for the first few who shared their location, although I don't know how to check this (I used it pretty early on, and have contacted AAT).

Thanks for organising!

Can't go wrong

Overall this is a good event that's worth doing.

It's grown a lot since the first installment in 2014. Woking leisure centre is a convenient place to start, although there isn't much parking down there - better to park in the town centre and walk the 15-20 mins to the start.

The course is virtually flat (only 2-3 small inclines to get up - 2 of which are up to railway bridges), so it's a good one for a PB if you're after one. The parts of the course away from town around hook heath are sparsely populated with locals watching from their driveways, but nearer the start/finish support is pretty good. There are bands and things like that dotted around as well which are a nice distraction.

This is one of the few races I've done which actually provides enough toilets at the start. Full marks for that so I hope it continues! There are a couple of aid stations too, so no need to carry water around.

It's a little on the expensive side but the road closures (including the main Woking-Guildford road) can't be cheap, and it's worth it to not have to queue for that pre-race toilet stop!!

First ever race

it was a great day my first race ever I was nervous but got chatting to others and the nerves went.

My wife and two children came to watch and they seem my at the loop section so got to see them all twice for that needed boost.

The course was good a few hills but not to bad.

Since this race I've entered more races through all about triathlons  Web site .

I would recommend this race it's a good local race and it's a half marathon so not to far for those us who think the full one is to far. But it's got all the buzz on the day as if it was a big city full marathon.

The expo in Feb before the race was good went to that and got some good advice.

And the medal is great worn with pride on my slow sore walk home.

I booked the 2017 race the night I finished that one.

Up & down but not really..

This was my second half marathon, the first being Hampton court half where I was left fairly underwhelmed at their treatment of slower runners. Happy to report that the Surrey half completely met my expectations and restored my faith. The run up emails meant there was no excuse to miss the start line, the gentlemen on the tannoy was great from the countdown to the start removing panic about waiting in the bag drop queue to the end where we were welcomed to the finish line by name.

Points of improvement would be the maze they seemed to have created for the bag drop, I'd also like a T-Shirt or goody bag.

Faultless organisation and wonderful atmosphere

As a 1st timer at the Surrey 1/2 I was extremely impressed.  The organisaiton really was faultless.  Yes there were queues for the bag drop 20 mins before the race start, but that comes with 5,000 people wanting to hang on to their coats on a chilly morning.  The PA system politely kept everyone informed of the time and what they should be doing, or thinking about doing!  Going to the loo, bag drop etc.  There were no delays in the start.  The atmosphere on the route was great fun.  Residents standing in their driveways drinking tea, brass bands, rock bands.  Not many runners were in fancy dress which made a spectacle of the ones that were, most noticeably Tony the Fridge.  Would not hesitate to recommend or sign up again in the future.

Great Half marathon

Well done on a very good half marathon. Support around the course was very good. The only complaint is with the mile markers being off, some short and a couple long mile 12 being very short! Being a pacemaker this caused a bit of unrest.

Nevertheless a very good course, uphills weren't lung busters and you were always rewarded with a downhill afterwards.

Surrey Alps Half!

Surrey Half Marathon

I was running on behalf of a local Charity Woking Hospice. I didn't have the best preparation as I was running with a swollen ankle from falling down the stairs two days before!
The event was very well organised. Your race number was sent in post & the race pack was online or on the App. I chose to use the App as it was easy & useful for the Parking Map & Race Day info. The event Village was in the middle of the Start and Finish so had a great buzz for relatives and you were able to find everything & each other easily! The Baggage was easy to access in the Leisure Centre, a brilliant idea as then the changing facilities were useable straight after the race.
There were plenty of toilets!
The Start was organised with plenty of space & penned for your finish time. I chose to run with the 1:50 Pacers. It was great to hear the commentary he was very encouraging and kept you well informed as to how long before the start.
The route was very 'Undulating' flat they said! I can assure you it's not with a couple of stingers of hills in. It's a well marshalled course and as its all closed to traffic it did not get too congested. Plenty of water stations to get you round & a wonderful spectator Finish.
I didn't have one of my best runs, had a great day & fab bit of finishing Bling!

Lovely Race Just Outside of London

Almost missed due to a logisitica failure on my part (aka the London Underground has a later start time on Sundays!) I was simply happy to make it to the race!

Bag drop off/pick up was very simple (a bit of a queue on either end, but 5 min max fr both) and they were also offering massages pre and post race (bit longer queue).

An abundance of loos scattered thruought the race village made getting in the last loo before the race quite easy.

Race started on time (hooray!)

Lovely road race along the country road of surrey with some nice views of fields and pastures, and passing by little towns produced some lively local cheering teams. Little kids tried for high fives and liberally gave out jelly babies.

Dont let the race info fool you-- there are steady inclines along the route (not sure I would go as far to say they are hills but they are there). Just be prepared!

Lovely running bunch as well-- would recommend if you are looking for a race that day!

Best race this year!

Surrey Half Marathon

this was my tied race this year and it really was the best so far!

The lead up to the race was great and felt well prepared. Event village was buzzing and well laid out.

Local support was really wonderful and helped to make the race truly wonderful. Great scenery and interesting course.

Great medal, only one thing I would like to see is a goody bag, I do love a goody bag :)

Once again, a very good race

Everything went very smoothly and worked well. The course is nice and flat (ish) and you get lots of support along the way.

Excellent organisation, flat and fast, great race

A little pricey, but faultless organisation, lots of toilets, 2 pacers for each 10-minute-separated finish goal time, squeezy water bottles at the 4 stations, nice and flat = fast, loads of helpers for the bag drop and water stations, nice medal.

Great race for PB attempts.

My first half!

First timer so nothing to compare it to, but I was struck by the friendly atmosphere and despite being a first timer I wasn't made to feel like a newbie. Loads of support from fellow runners spurring me on. Well organised, great atmosphere and a really nice and picturesque course.

Excellent half through pretty Surrey heath

Very well organised. Good course. Mainly flat some minor inclines. Loved the event. Great atmosphere. 4,500 people.  Bag drop could be better organised.

Surrey Half Marathon Closed Road Race 13/03/2016

As a keen recreational runner the Surrey Half Marathon is by far my favourite half. It offers all the elements I consider when entering a race, such as natural scenery, support from race organisers and the uniqueness of the finisher's medal.

This year the race team split the training into two halves which worked well for an average runner like myself. I commenced my half marathon training with the Hogs Back race on 6/12/15 while the 5 kilometre race and workshop in February served as guide on how well my training should be progressing.

There was also a sports motivational mind training session which added a final bit of motivation and I came away from the talk having felt like I'd already run the half in my head.

Toby, the race director was also quite lovely and after meeting the rest of the AAT team I felt they too really enjoyed running, so the race gets  a massive 10 from me!
