About the race

7 miles of Mud and Christmas Fun

Start your Christmas with a muddy splash, welcome to the MudCrew end of year bash!

The race runs through land at the world famous Lost Gardens of Heligan some of which the public never have access. It consists of approx 7 miles of trail and, in true Mud Crew style, a splattering of mud and a few little water features.

Après race, you can retire to The Scrooge “Grotto” where the MudCrew Christmas party really takes off starting with a free pint of St Austell Brewery Korev Lager, a mince pie and a special MudCrew Christmas gift.

A DJ will be in full swing from noon until 4pm where you can catch up with all your running friends and discuss the year’s achievements and the challenges ahead. Family and friends welcome. Hot food and drinks available all day.

Dress code: Hoodies, muddy trainers…get the picture?!?

Muddiest Wettest Run ever

After taking part in a Marathon the day before, my legs were a tad achey, but with 3 good friends with me, we donned our elf costumes in the Car Park and headed for the start, we were all running together for some pre christmas fun, after doing it last year, i had roped the others in on the promise of some real trail running fun, they were not dissapointed.

Last year I ran it in 1hr 25 with another friend, and we treated it more like a race, this year we threw the time out the window and laughed all the way around, espicially when ten penguins started gaining on us up Rattler Hill, with the call of "Quick the penguins are gaining on us". If you want fun, mud, hills, fun, cider, wine, fun, mud, water, mud then this is for you, its what running is all about.

Why the 4/5 for logistics, no bag drop this year and changing in the car park after the race is always a tad tricky using just a towel to protect others from a sight they really do not need. But these are very minor issues.

Thank you Brian. Always good to see you. We are looking at the bag drop but are limited by the venue. We hope to use the conservatory next year!

A Very Muddy Scrooge

Third time I have completed this event so obviously I love it! Marshals as always lovely and supportive and extra mud this year made it hilarious in places, although not sure about the suspected pig poo I fell in haha. I did make a suggestion to the wonderful Ratlers crew that next year they could supply a sprout flavour Ratlers

Great Christmas Trail Run

All in all this is a brilliant and fun event. Everyone dressed up in Christmas themed outfits and there was lots of laughs going through all the natural obstacles. It was well marshalled and the course was a good mix of trails, hills and water features.

A couple of observations to make this a 5* event:

. Signage and directions for spectators at Heligan wasn't brilliant, especially if you haven't done the event before.

. A shame the start/finish doesn't coincide with where the spectators are.

Hi Jane, thank you for the feedback. We will certainly take the signage issue on board. We know that moving the finish away from Heligan brought some difficulties but we had no option but to do this. We will look to see what we can do to improve that. X

Another amazing Mudcrew event

The Scrooge

Awesome trail run on path, field, mud, mud, mud and water (clearly we had to wade through this as we couldn't manage to run on it). Marshalls were all happy and vocal, merlot and cider where isnshould be. One thing required for next year is headed ponds :-))

Running Christmas Party with a twist!

The Scrooge

Another fantastic event that really can only be described as a Running Christmas Party! Mudcrew not only put on sublime events they create memories that last!
My cheeks are hurting from smiling so much and I have dirt and grit in places I didn’t think possible.
Well organised as always and their choice of food venders at the event were excellent.

It's good

Overall a good well organised race. BUT never received the briefing email this year or last.

Second time I've done it. This year bag drop was removed - making it very challenging to get warm after race as has to rely on a lift at a set time... and because i had no bag i couldn't call them so was left somewhat chilly!

Feed stations are excellent offering sweets, water and coke. The alcohol on the way round makes it super festive.

This race really misses the mark without offering a medal. Last race of the season for the company and for so many taking part... It's a real shame a medal isn't offered.

Would be good to see warm drinks/soup on offer straight after race rather than cider? Although I'm sure many may disagree. Even hot water would be good!

Marshals are undoubtedly fabulous and their enthusiasm gets you round.

Loo access was much better this year.

All in all a good race, but please get some bling!!

Hi Karen,
I’ll try and answer your points for you.
Emails are sent automatically to the registered email addresses. It went to your supplies address, we have checked. Either check your settings as if you are registered not to receive event emails, it will get blocked. Also, check your email address on SI entries, that it is correct. We always post the email to the MudCrew page so hopefully you saw it on there.
We are at the mercy of the venue regarding bag drop, you will have noticed the new conservatory wasn’t finished so it became out of bounds, that was our bag drop!
This is one of our few events where there are no medals, but we supply a “buff” a mince pie and our sponsors give everyone a pint. There are 2 food outlets both serving hot drinks and a barista coffee van.

Another great event

A great fun event to start the Christmas season.

The new start and finish make it easier for runners but not for spectators dropping people off, then having to go to Heligan and then come back again.Shame their isn't a mini bus to do that for a nominal cost. (Greener, safer less trafic movements).

Brilliant atmosphere, support and cameraderie.

Thank you.

Lots of mud, water and fun!

The Scrooge

On 18 December, MudCrew the Cornish Off Road running club staged their annual 7 mile off road Scrooge race at the Lost Gardens of Heligan. Runners from teams all over Cornwall get into the spirit of Christmas by wearing fancy dress & celebrating the end of the running year. After the race is done and dusted its usually time to kick back, pull some shapes and enjoy some festive toons at the MudCrew christmas party. All washed down with a free glass of the chosen alcoholic beverage sponsor and a mince pie!

The run is a toughie with lots of deep mud and several water crossings including chest high ponds and ankle deep streams. It takes in some very undulating countryside fields and pathways and is very techical in places. The course was tweaked from previous years and this year started in the village of Mevagissey. There was plenty of parking with a short walk up to registeration, ideal to check in and go back to the car to get changed and prepped.

The race started bang on time and was all uphill at the start, which meant downhill at the end. The pond areas attract the most spectators as this is the place to make an impression by either jumping or diving into the murky brown water - just keep your mouth shut!!! Aid stations were placed throughout the course as was the famous merlot stop (shot of red wine) in memory of local ultra runner Dave Rowe and this year saw a Rattler (cider) shot stop also at the top of one of the hill climbs. I had the merlot but passed on the cider!!!

This year saw over 500 runners take part and is always a great event. Well done MudCrew!!!

Great wet and muddy Christmas run!

Fantastic wet and muddy Christmas fun. Great opportunity to run a beautiful course with added boggy pools, steep hills, booze stops, bog hopping and stream navigation!

The only slight frustration was the bottleneck at the start and even that was fun as I managed to follow some Christmas crackers through the crowds!

Still the best start to Christmas!

The run is the ideal start to the wind down to Christmas. It has a great atmosphere, fun attitude and a course with nice variety with lots of support from spectators and fellow runners. Worthwhile for sure.

I had a great time!

Bad points.  Couldn't hear the briefing at all. Got thoroughly stuck behind fun runners at the start (my fault, I'll push up front next time).

Great fun, fantastic atmosphere. Loved the booze stations, mud and water. I'll be back next year.

Great first Scrooge!

Really enjoyed the day. Only comments would be that it would be nice for t-shirts to be cheaper to buy or included in the price. Also, it was annoying that the mince pies and drinks were inside seeing as we werent allowed to go in whilst muddy - perhaps have a stall outside next time?

Thanks for the feedback. Tee shirts/hoodies are something we have added this year, following several requests to be able to purchase a momento.
We had to respect the wishes of the people we hired the hall from regarding mud! I am sure you can appreciate that. You only had to ask, we would have brought mince pie/drink out to you, I can only apologise if you didn't get yours?

A truly unique event!

What a cracking little race - another quality offering from the experienced Mudcrew event organisers. Loved the course, the scenery, the "added extras", all made it a uniqe experience. Only minus was on the logistics of the seperate race start / spectator areas. That said, have learnt that next year I need to leave a bag of dry clothes and the car key in the safe baggage drop zone for after and not with my supporters who wandered off to Heligan to watch! Thanks to all involved. Roll on 2017!
