An early start required, out of bed at 2:30 am. I had registered the previous afternoon, so I was able to be fairly relaxed in the morning, just needing to be there for the walk along the Thames to the briefing point.
Once the briefing was done we filtered to the start point in our waves. The water was a balmy 17 degrees, very comfortable in a wetsuit.
The start is a little chaotic as the entire wave is treading water near the start line when the gun goes off.
I found visibility quite poor, but apparently, 2017 was a good year. I ended up swimming the 2.1km diagonally down the course and almost missed the finish as the gate does not go all the way across the course but only a small fraction of the width, which I was not aware of.
I enjoyed the swim and the walk back in the early morning light was very pleasant.
