← Race the Train

Competed in 2018 Quarry Challance race (10k) and wow was it a good race.

Arrived at the event carpark, this was manned but unfortunately was asking for £4 - i didnt have any cash so had to leave the carpark to look for a cash point in a tiny town i had never been to before. I was starting to feel a little bit anxious as i knew that the race had buses laid on to take you to the start line and i didnt want to miss it! Luckily quite near to the race HQ there was plenty of places to park with a short walk - phew made it!

I had a wonder around and there was loads for people to do, stalls selling things, an event tent with tea and coffee etc, bouncy castles for the little ones. I headed the for the start line buses which were outside the train station so had a good look at the train i would be racing.

I got on the bus and could feel the energy from the varius club runner groups. You could see how far and wide people had come to do the race. It very quickly dropped the 5 mile runners off at their start point and then the 10k.

Standing in the middle of a field i had a few chats with people in the porter potty queue lol everyone was so excited. Could have done with some more loos really, only 2 supplied although most of the men used natures toilet lol.

The train passed through a couple of times while waiting for the start time at 1115. When the time came the train was right next to us at the start and the train whistes 3 times to signify the start of the race. Luckily a gentleman who had ran before told me this or id have never known.

First couple of KM's was all uphill and quite a steep uphill too, but what goes up must come down, this is when the path narrowed and a steep downhill. We ran through some woodland and the train track was right next to us but by this time the train was gone and ahead. There were some real boggy parts, im sure the more competative runners just smashed through it but the likes of me, we stop and tentativly make our way around the edges haha.

We then ran through many fields and started to hit bits of road. The support was fantastic, people out of their houses on the streets cheering everyone on. They were fantastic. We even ran through someones garden at one point! He was also outside with a brew cheering.

About 2km from the end, i saw the train, on its way back up the track. So i hadnt beaten it but you know what, i dont mind. I enjoyed myself that much it really doesnt matter.

I came into streets on the last km or so and the support, again was fantastic. The community spirit i could feel in the air. I crossed the finish line and collected my goody bag. This was also well organised.

So all in all, couldnt have asked for more really.

I didnt attend myself but they had on the Friday night, a local pub/restaurant doing a pasta night for all the runners and also on the saturday there was a bit of an after party once the 14 mile competitors had finished. So it really is an all day event and such a good price too.
