Lynmouth is a great setting for an event and of all the superlatives you could use to describe this one I'd agree with the organisers- epic! Unfortunately we didn't get to do the swim because the sea was too rough, good call as I think we'd have kept the safety crew busy! The bike route was really well balanced, technically demanding at times but with nice open sections and fast flowing decents. The run route was brutally hard but the finale was breath taking. Looking down on the valley of rocks from the moor and then the cliff top run back in to Lynmouth was just incredible, overall it was truly an amazing place to race!
100% well signed and marshalls so enthusiastic brilliant aid stations top quality products used! Amazing race that's way tougher than wimbleball 70.3 ironman :-) xxxx
To paraphrase my own report I wrote on Sunday [ https://www.facebook.com/TeamREKO/posts/1343346949022930 ], please find my review as follows:
This event is brutal. Stunningly beautiful, but brutal.
Cycling part was very dangereous, with stones and dirt on the road.
Overall I was happy with everything and it's not called the beast for nothing.
This was my 4th Middle Distance Triathlon.
If cyling or running up the hills doesn't take your breath away the scenery certainly will. The 2 lap bike course takes in the Valley of the Rocks which is just a simply stunning natural rugged backdrop to ride through, the climbs give plenty of opportunity to slow the pace and take in the views (the goats, however, nonchalantly take it all for granted) with a great open moorland section and some speedy descents to get the adrenaline going. As stated in the breifing the run is truly 'epic' and it certainly lived up to this description; initially climbing alongside the babbbling East Lyn river, the course wound its way up (and down and up and down and up again) through woody trails and open moor to the highest point at 250m to now look down at the Valley of the Rocks, truly epic. The final stretch back into Lynmouth alongside the coastal cliff path was a final treat of a stunning run course. It was a tough race, thats for sure, but somehow the distraction of the scenery just made the time and distance drift by. Highly recommended race, great team and Lynmouth a great setting with plenty of opportunity for cake at the end!
