About the race

St Micheal's Way Lelant to Marazion

Fordh Sen Mighal: A Pilgrimage

Saturday 9th December 2017 @ 10am

The one and only original St. Michaels Way race :Lelant to Marazion .12 miles! Britain's ONLY European Cultural Route. The 3nd time ever that Britain’s only European Cultural route will be raced.

Exquisite trail running with a few road crossings across the inland of the West Cornwall Peninsula taking in the breath taking views of St Michaels Mount where the race will start near to,Trencrom, Ninnes Bridge, Knill's Monument, St Uny church and St Ives Bay, Mount's Bay and my personal favourite, 'Bowl Rock'.

Wonderfully undulating sections such as Trencrom which stands just over 550ft and farmland that creeps toward the 600 mark.

St Michael's Way is the only designated European Cultural Route and finishes at Camino to Santiago de Compostela, although we will be running the Cornish leg of course.

The path has been used since prehistoric times, to cross the Cornish Peninsula and provided safe passage for missionaries who brought Christianity to Cornwall. These missionaries, who followed the Saint Michael's Way, and similar paths, are commemorated as saints in place names throughout the County.

St Michael's Mount (The iconic finish)has a counterpart in France at Mont Saint Michel. Both sites have much in common in their history and legends. In particular, the Archangel Gabriel was supposed to have appeared at both sites during the Fifth Century

Discover the heritage. Discover where your ancestors once cascaded .Discover the Cornish life in trail shoes. Run like the wind and fly through time where centuries of life are still visible.

Note: There are 2 major 'A' road crossings on the route(A30 and A394).

Also there's a train crossing to boot.

Dog runners welcome but misbehaved dogs and irresponsible owners will lead to no time or place and stopped from the race by any event crew member at any time.

Every measure will be taken to ensure the absolute safety of every single person from runner to crew and oncoming vehicles.

Mementos to all finishers!

One of my fav races of 2017

Fordh Sen Mighal

After previously marshalling this event I couldn't wait to run it this year! I wasn't disappointed. Once again Bys Vyken events organised a great race....well organised....fab marshals.....lovely cakes and the best medal!! Attention to detail is always priority with David's races and it really shows. I'll definitely be back again next year

Life changing!

An amazing friend gave me entry to this race as a birthday present the day I ran my first Parkrun. It seemed a terrifying but exciting prospect. Having trained all year for it it felt both more terrifying and more exciting - I loved every muddy minute of it! The atmosphere from the start was great, the route varied, challenging and beautiful, the marshalls and wonderful sweepers unfailingly cheerful, the medal gorgeous. Can’t wait to do it again (faster!) next year...

A very special Cornish race

Fordh Sen Mighal

The race itself is across the ancient St Michaels Way from Carbis Bay to Mounts Bay. Stunning views, varied terrain, lots of mud, fields, coastpath, road, track it has it all. The only downside for people travelling down to the west of Cornwall is you do need 2 cars so that you have a vehicle at the finish then can get to the start. But a good vibe, very friendly and inclusive of all abilities with lovely marshals encouraging you all the way. It is self navigating but you get a map and  if you can read a Map it’s helpful otherwise follow the way markets too.

Ford Sen Mighal Race Review 2017

A brilliant event and race from start to finish. This is the second year that I have competed in this event , and it was even better than last year , and I am sure it will improve and gain in popularity in the years ahead. The only "improvement advice" i can offer , is for improved signage at a couple of key points where several runners went wrong ( so it wasnt just one !!) . These are at Carbis Bay , at the very bottom of Wheal Margery , where a few runners missed the St.Michaels Way sign and kept going towards St.Ives. The other place is at the top of the lane leading down to Bowlrock Chapel ( where the very badly parked car is located ). Several runners  (including myself) went past the stile in the corner of the field that leads into the lane and down to the very badly parked car , and kept going into a very large steeply sloping field. Improved signage at this point would definitely help , though I personally accept my own navigational error , and recognise the fact that i was given a map , and it is a trail race ( rather than a road race !! ). Overall ; Ford Sen Mighal is a fantastic event , that I will be very keen to enter again next year. Everyone i know thoroughly enjoyed the race , and i thought that the after-race food and drink laid on for us at the Station House was superb !! Hats off to you David , and I will be back for a third time in 2018 !!

Thank you Paul. I agree looking back that the signage at Bowl Rock could have been improved. However at Wheal Margery the marshals there saw a disgruntled lady remove the signage and throw it all over a hedge. I'm glad you had an overall great experience and I'm looking forward to seeing you again for hopefully the 3rd year

Loved every step of the way!

I’ve done this race twice now & loved it both times - route is interesting & varied, great views if the weather is good! It’s well organised & friendly. My only comment would be more ladies toilets at the start & a hot veggie food option at the end. I’ll be back next year for sure !

Pilgrims challenge

Second time for this challenge and the weather gods were kind to us. The course has everything from sparkling sea views to monuments to climb to. it,s not flat and it,s not going to be fast for anyone but the long legged speedsters but when you top the climb and gasping take in the view it is all worth it. Bys Vyken host stunning events that take you to secret places in ways that stretch and make you respect your environment and achieve beyond your expectations. Will we be back ...Definitely .

Another belter from Bys Vyken!

This race has it all, stunning scenery; a logical, linear route with lots of history, crossing the county from the North to the South coast and taking in all kinds of terrain.

You'll run on coast path, trails, tarmac, fields & fells, there will be mud in abundance and even some sand dunes. And lets not forget the hills. There are a good few of those too. That said this is a very runnable course, some short sections are technical but for most part its runnable and, after the lung busting ascents in the first half there is a lot more down hill and flat running towards the end, if you have the energy left.

Oh, and of course there's also a castle. And both start and finish are at pubs.

Bys Vyken looked after us again really well, as always. Looking forward to the next one.

Great event!

A thouroughly enjoyable experience and event. I really enjoyed the cultural and historical aspect of the race and it's why I will run future races with Bys Vyken. You could tell a lot of thought and attention had gone into the whole race and the meaning behind it. It wasn't just another A to B race. Although it was the first race I've done at a higher mileage it's made me realise that longer distance running is where it's at and I'm looking forward to their next event! Only slight qualm was one slightly difficult to follow sign on the route but recce runs and maps of the route were offered/provided so it would have purely been me at fault if I'd have got lost..

Posted on 16.12.17

Reply from the race organiser

Thank you Leo. Great words and I'm really chuffed you had a good day. I apologise for the misleading sign. Course marking for 8+ hours in wind and hale storms took its toll and it must have been a simple oversight yet a silly mistake to make. I'm gutted as I am usually on the ball with everything.
However I'm proud with all of it and the turnout and runners themselves were amazing. Its runners like you that inspire me to stick with it all so thank you

Best way to spend a December Saturday!

Mud, boulders, sand, coast path, fields, and goodness knows what else! All for a great value entry fee with tons of cheery marshals encouraging and offering supplies as you try to convince you legs and yourself that the latest epic climb was totally fine :)

Perfect vibe coming in to Christmas with the nice added touch of the historic and heritage link to the pilgrims' way.

Another beautifully organised event.

Fordh Sen Mighal

Lucky enough to have had a helping hand in several aspects of this event.

Dave always goes above and beyond to deliver a memorable safe race. The weather on the day of course marking was trying, extremely windy!! Plenty of signage was placed out on course and a detalied map is also provided to all participants so all eventualities are covered.

Loved marshalling and encouraging runners along the way. Amazing medal and trophies and even the dogs got recognition! Who else does that?!?

An event to be very proud of! Well done!

Fordh Sen Mighal

This is my 2nd crack this event. I loved it last year despite the horrendous weather, but was even better this year in dry conditions. A great course, with good mix of coastpath, road and trail, two good climbs in the first half, which if it hasn't taken it out of you, sets up nicely to push on for a great finish. Definitely a race I will do again and again. Bloody brilliant

No better way to traverse Cornwall

Fordh Sen Mighal

The personal wonder of running from the Atlantic to the English Channel is enough but throw in the amazing scenery, astounding views and great atmosphere and it doesn't get much better.

I know a few people missed turnings but a very good map is supplied and I saw all the directional arrows so no complaints here. Good mix of trail terrain from compacted sand dunes to coast paths, open fields and jumping across boulders all added to the fun over a good length course which is a challenge to finish for some and a challenging flat out race for others.

Totally going back next year.

A race and a route for all.

This is the second time I have completed this event. Fantastic route and very well signed. This race is suitable for most runners. But it is a trail race so plenty of elevation, mud and amazing views. There was plenty to eat and drink on the route and hot chilli and mince pies at the finish. Very well designed medal too!

I loved every part of this event.

From booking to finishing.

Everything was perfect (except a nasty chesty cold)

The Route was amazing. Seeing St Michael’s mount from the halfway point (almost) was beautiful and encouraging.

Everything we needed was explained and confirmed.

Infully recommend this event and will be eager to do it again.

The medal is the best one I’ve had.

Very enjoyable course and well organised, the bag drop was invaluable and there was a good vibe in general. The refreshments at the end were also good quality. The signposts however could have been clearer, I was lucky to be running in/near a group most of the time and therefore didn’t get lost but some people did, I think there could have been a couple more marshals at the entrances to footpaths and bigger signs. Otherwise top notch!

Posted on 11.12.17

Reply from the race organiser

Heya Ryan. Glad you had a great run. Bigger signs would be great if it wasn't for the fact our small ones were removed.lol
However this is why we provide a map and a GPX file downloadable from the website. Unfortunately there were a few items removed by an angry dog walker who didn't like runners by the looks of it. However that won't stop us from changing up the signs for next year and having brighter and clearer ones but not necessarily bigger. There are a couple of points where extra marshals could be placed granted. I will look it to this for next year. Look at it this way...
You know the way for next time now ;)

love this event. 2nd time of taking part. Beautiful route with stunning views. Well marked apart from one arrow which was pointing right and the course was left. Not sure what had happened there but I had the GPX and a local who knew the way!! Totally missed CP 1 but that was probably me!

Love this race, great medal and great support. Hats off to the marshals on the course, they do a brilliant job. Especially the major road crossings, really well looked after. And next year I am not following Tim Leadsford through that field!

Great event

Not my first Bys Vyken event and definitely won't be my last!

This was my first go at this event and I am thankful that the weather was better than last year. It was very cold but dry which posed me a number of decisions with what to wear. Within 1 mile I was down to the essentials lol.

Stunning and unique course, especially when you run through someones garden and the climb up to Trencrom hill is a beaut. Lots of climbing in the first half of the race but don't think the second half will be easy!

Amazing views coming into Marazion overlooking St Michaels Mount and a lovely friendly finish. The Lemon Drizzle cake was amazing.

Fun, friendly, scenic and tough. What's not to like.

Would recommend to everyone.
