About the race

Stradbroke Super Sprint Triathlon

Taking place in beautiful mid-Suffolk this is the ideal early season triathlon. Award winning in 2016 and with the choice of a Saturday Evening and a Sunday morning triathlon as well as Tri Star aquathlons for children, there really is something for everyone at this super friendly event. The swim is short and simple with triathletes completing 2 lengths of each lane in the pool before exiting. The single lap bike route takes in some literally breath taking views along country roads through the surrounding villages. Finally the run comprises two laps around the playing fields & arable fields adjacent to the leisure centre. Suitable for youths and adults aged 15+ ( as of 31.12.16) this is ideal for novices as well as a great warm up to the season for more experienced competitors.

A great event to participate in!

This is my first Stradbroke triathlon (2nd triathlon so far) and what a well organised and friendly event it was. Great atmosphere too! I would highly recommend anyone who is new to this sport to try it out. All the marshalls who took time out to support all who took part were amazing and encouraging, thats what I love about this sport!  I will certainly be back next year to compete. Thanks everyone.

Beautifully Perfect Race

Stradbroke Triathlon

I marshalled this event last year as a non triathlete. This race inspired me to learn to swim!

I returned this year to Marshall on the Saturday evening and took part on the Sunday morning.

The race is suitable for both the beginner and more experienced. You will experience an easy, straightforward registration and bike racking process. Lots of friendly help to assist if needed.

The swim is short, 160m, completed in a 20m pool, progressing up, down and under ropes (4 lanes) ladies first. Fast to slow.

Bike 17k scenic route through beautiful countryside. Not too many Hills to worry about either! I liked this!!!

Run 3k, around the field and out onto the perimeter of a farmers field, twice. Nice scenery, quite tough underfoot.  Lots of marshalls to get you around!

This is a great event and I thoroughly recommend it. Very well organised, marshalled and supported. Lots of smiles and fun. An event for the organisers to be proud of.

Medal and AG winning trophies.

Great event, especially suitable for newbies

A really good event, and well deserving of its recommendation from Racecheck. All the women entrants go first before the men, which seems to me to be a thoughtful way of doing it (though I'd be interested in a comment from a woman on this?!) It is a short pool swim, easy access to T1, and out on a single 17 km circuit with no compulsory footstops. There are some testing hills but nothing unduly demanding, and as always in Suffolk the countryside is as pretty as can be.

Back into T2 and out on a double loop round the playing field and an agricultural field: this seems to me to be the only weakness at Stradbroke, as there are quite a lot of sharp corners, one "pinch point" and about two thirds of the run is on fairly rutted farm land. There's not much opportunity to really stretch your legs and try and get up to speed (not that that's a great worry for oldies like me!)

It is well marshalled, there is lots of encouragement all along the routes, and even some stalls with refreshments and accessories to browse afterwards. All in all an excellent event, perhaps especially suitable for first timers just trying it out.

Thanks for the thorough review AJ. Whilst the run may be challenging for a number of reasons we are very lucky indeed for the landowners to give us permission to use their land on race day. Without it there simply wouldn't a Stradbroke triathlon! We've taken your comments on board and will make sure race details etc detail the running surface that competitors can expect.

Hoping we'll see you again at the 2018 event?

Thanks to Carolyn, and the team, that made my first Triathlon so memorable. The support I got before, and on the day, to overcome my fear of a swimming pool, were amazing.

First time. Definitely not the last!

Entered this race on a whim as I had missed out on an early super sprint in the season.

The course involves a 160m swim in a 20m pool, a 17k rural ride and a 3k off road run.

Whilst the event may not sound remarkable in itself, it benefits from the most friendly atmosphere I've ever encountered. Everyone, and I mean everyone, is super nice - even the transition manager who, from experience at other events, can be a bit of a control freak, at Stradbroke is really helpful.

My family came to watch the event too and had a great time. Whilst viewing is pretty much restricted to transition and the run section, the ride distance means they weren't waiting for hours for me to appear after T1.

Certainly be back next year - considering "doing the double"!

Friendly, Fast and Fun Event!

This triathlon is brilliant - great for those starting out as everyone is super friendly and helpful, nothing is too much trouble. The bike route is lovely and has some inclines thrown in and the run is a simple two lap route. As I have attended this event on my own for the past two years the support from the spectators and staff is incredible. I competed in this event in 2016 as my first ever triathlon and I signed up for the 2017 as soon as registration opened as I loved it and it's a great event to aim for a PB! I would thoroughly recommend it.

Friendly, family day (or weekend)!

My first time at this event but not my first super sprint. From the simple registration through the regular updates and pre event opportunities to practice swimming technique, biking skills and transitions right up to the finish line, this event was a delight. The organiser live and breathe swim/bike/run, coaching the skills locally and their enthusiasm pervades the event. Coupled with the aquathlon for the youngsters, this weekend makes for a wonderful sporty family day or indeed week end. This event is a delight.

Great for first time triathletes

This is a great triathlon for anyone looking to try the sport.

The swim is a simple indoor affair that is easy to understand and not to long.

The bike route is very easy to navigate and nice and flat too.

Again, the run route is fairly straight forward with a couple of laps past all the people supporting.

This is a great event for first timers. Well organised and great support from the public.

Great sprint event - well organised

An excellent friendly and local (to me) event.  My whole family enjoys taking part each year because it includes an Aquathlon for the kids.

The swim is a very short pool snake style 160m section which makes it ideal for the nervous novices who aren't confident swimmers. There's always the handful of participants who can't accurately predict their 100m swim time or think they should enter their 160m time (myself included). I find it difficult to submit my time accurately entering the event... should it be 100m pool start in a 20m pool or a diving-in race PB in a 25m pool? Normally the 30 second gap between starts is enough to avoid getting held up or overtaken but there's always a little bit of this.

The transition is located directly outside the pool so there is no lengthy wet run to your bike. The anti-clockwise bike route is on very quiet countryside roads which are well signposted and marshalled. The run is entirely off road on the trail around the playing fields and a private field used specifically for the event (so no full run recce possible). The finish area has plenty of food, drink and other stalls of interest.

I would highly recommend this event to anyone looking for a sprint. It is very well organised by the experienced team at Active Outdoor Sport and I look forward to an extended whole weekend event in 2017.

Stradbroke Scores Again

For the 2nd year running Stradbroke Triathlon has been a triumph.  It is a genuine community day-out with very many local people getting involved from assisting the official marshalls to selling cakes and drinks to the community centre opening the bar and all its facilities and, mostly, to the crowds who come along to cheer and encourage the participants.  The atmosphere is terrific and this is truly helped by the excellent local organisation in Stradbroke.  It is thoroughly planned and co-ordinated by Carolyn Hatton and there are plenty of opportunities offered by her and other Stradbroke Swim and Fitness Centre staff months in advance for participants to improve their ability.  I was able to take advantage of several such short courses which really helped me with both my swimming and running and am doing the same now to prepare for next year's triathlon.  I would strongly recommend this triathlon to anyone - novice or fierce competitor - as there is challenge available over the different terrains but there is also full support for the less confident.

Great event, for novices and experienced alike

Active Outdoor Sport always work hard with their events, and this was no exception. The parking might have been a little better organised (only using the more distant one once the nearer one had filled – this would avoid lots of three-point turns there!), but the venue worked very well, and the organisation as ever was fine.

The shorter swim worked well for weaker or slow swimmers, and the cycle, through the pretty Suffolk countryside, was great. There were some potholes, but they were well marked and we were prewarned. Some hills added an extra challenge, but not enough to put off the novices.

The run, round a playing field and a farmer's field, worked well, though the latter was quite uneven and narrow in places, making overtaking a little difficult. Added to some sharp corners, it probably wasn't the fastest of run routes.

But overall a great event, good to see quite a lot of stalls afterwards for meandering around whilst cooling down, and AOS deserve congratulations as ever.

A fun day at stradbroke swim and fitness centre

Well organised and the only reason I put down the briefing was because the hall was packed so we couldn't get in.

It was lovely weather and it went so well I am sure this was organised by the event as well.

Pin a small village so lots of support and part I hope of the annual village events. It is a great event for both novice and the more serious who compete side by side and the encouragement is tremendous.

Coming in to transition is exciting And encouraging. Finishing with friends around is great and then praise after from other competitors and organisers is fantastic. What more can you ask for?

I flew in from Cuba on the Saturday and would not miss the event on the Sunday for anything.

Thanku everyone who organised it and competitors alike.

Friendly local race - great for first timers and experienced triathletes

Very friendly, well organised event. Marshall support is excellent. Distances are great for weaker swimmers/those starting out as the swim is only 160m. Bike is a lovely scenic route and the run is a mixture of path and off road in a field which adds interest. Great for spectators as there is a kids play area, BBQ etc and plenty of space to run around. Fantastic, well organised event!

This was my first triathlon event and I couldn't have chosen better! The support, friendliness and organisation of this event was second to none, not just on race day but the entire lead up to it.

The day itself ran smoothly and without a hitch. Information was clear and concise, the route was very well marshalled and the support was fantastic.

My thanks go to Active Outdoor Sport, in particular - Carolyn, the event organiser, the race day marshals & volunteers, the Everyone Active Staff.... et al. It was such an enjoyable day that I will have no hesitation booking another event organised by the same company in the future.

I will most definitely try another Tri in the future based on this experience.
