← The Charles Darwin Day

Charles Darwin Challenge took place at Shrewsbury Sports village cycle track. It was a multi lap race with each lap approxmately 1km long.

Race had 5k, 10k, half marathon or full marathon options so catered for all abilities.

The idea of a Friday Marathon was quite appealing so I thought, why not.

Registration was straight forward. There was plenty of pre-race information.

Race HQ was at the sports centre, directly next to the track. This meant toilets and facilities were available for runners to use.

There was a good atmosphere in and around HQ..

Race numbers were collection on the day.

With the race number there was also a timing chip which would count the laps.

There was a place for baggage, next to the track.

I selected marathon distance. This would mean 43x laps to complete 26.2 mile distance.

To some people this might seen like torture but my plan was to switch off and focus on the distance rather than the number of laps.

The course was fast, flat and on smooth tarmack.

I did find the 43x lap route mentally very tough but on a good day you could smash a super-fast time.

Progress of laps completed were shown on a computer screen.

On the plus side there was a well stocked water/feed station each lap.

Nature of the course meant local support was non-existent but runners were able to support and encourage each other during the race.

The marshals were absolutely brilliant.

Finishers of all distances were rewarded with one of the best medals I have ever received. It's an absolute beauty.

There were also various items to eat at the finish.

In summary - This was a good, honest race with a nice atmosphere and good value.

No getting away from it, 43x laps is mentally very tough but if you tackle it right, the flat course makes it perfect for smashing a very fast time.

I'd like to thank Denzil Martin and team for a great day.

Would I do this race again? 100% yes.
